Project Loon is getting real!

When we launched Project Loon in 2013 we hoped to answer a single question - could balloons be used to connect people to the Internet? Proving that this was possible in our New Zealand launch then led the team to start asking a much larger question - how can we make this work for everyone, no matter where they are in the world? How do you manufacture enough balloons to be able to provide coverage anywhere in the world and then launch them and control them so that there is always a balloon overhead to provide connection to the user on the ground?

In this latest video Project Lead Mike Cassidy offers a glimpse behind the scenes into how the Project Loon team have been tackling the challenges involved in moving from small scale, one-off launches and tests, to the scale and automation required to make balloon-powered Internet for all a reality.

I don't actually know but if it has to be reusable, I think it must involve compressing and decompressing either helium or air to change the density of the system. It could also involve releasing helium out of the balloon but I doubt that strategy would work for over 100 days.

I believe the air streams at that altitude are fairly constant but if they aren't, a system of thousands of balloons should be able to measure and interpolate, I imagine.

It doesn't make sense to ask people about these numbers in this way because they are too abstract for people to interpret directly. I'm sure you could ask a different question and get answers that directly contradict the other answers from the same people just because of the way it's phrased.

I had no idea! Is the same true for the alpha channel in semi-transparent "colors"?

I'm beginning to think that framebuffers should be using floating point numbers representing luminances in CIE color space and converted to monitor color space for display by the graphics card. That would make doing the Right Thing so much simpler.

Holy cow! If you have a Lenovo computer you must read this.

Lenovo pre-installs a web proxy that injects ads. It MITMs HTTPS traffic by installing its own trusted root certificate.

Always install your OS manually. Don't trust the OEM's version.

EDIT:  Holy shit, apparently it's the same key for all installs: https://twitter.com/fugueish/status/568258997578371072

(The private key is necessarily present on the machine. So basically if the key is not public already it will be shortly, and anyone will be able to spoof any web site to Lenovo users.)

EDIT2: Uninstalling the app does NOT remove the certificate. https://twitter.com/metsfan/status/568265468173107200

Surely you mean: "if you have a Lenovo computer and left all that ridiculous pre-installed crap on it you need to read this".

The pre-installed crap you get on a new computer is like the cheesy photo of a smiling couple that you get when you buy a new picture frame. The first thing you do is throw that shit away and put something useful in there.

We came to spend bitcoins but the wraps we had were delicious. The people are also very nice. I would just recommend sticking a "Bitcoin accepted here" sticker on the door.

Driving was fun but the competition was pointless as the same car (#13) won every time regardless of who was driving it. Also our company event was supposed to last until 16:30 but finished at 16:00. We could have done a few more races.
