Google I/O conference lottery submitted. We'll see if I actually get it.

Kind of weird if you look at if from a skewed angle: A lottery to win the hotly contested right to pay them to market stuff at you :)

Second digital Pentax 645, which has the specs the original one SHOULD have had. Their first try at MF digital was utter shite for the price they were asking. I would think about getting one (I am already invested in its glass) except I just bought a Nikon Df.

I hope it also has the THUD when the mirror slaps. I suspect no sound akin to the motor wind of the original 645.

I did an NFC payment today via Google Wallet at Walgreen's (a US pharmacy chain). I have done this sort of thing nearly every day in Japan for the last 5 years but the clerk made it out to be a big deal and said it was the first time she'd ever seen someone pay via contactless. Guess there's a long way to go before it hits the mainstream in North America.

There also seems to be a fundamental difference between the reasons for NFC payments in Asia and North America: In North America they want a replacement for carrying credit cards when in Asia they want a replacement for carrying coins.

+Aaron Lothian Huh. The more you know.

What I meant (and what I believe she was referring to) was the fact that NFC isn't activated unless the screen is on/unlocked (unless rooted and told otherwise) so if my phone is locked and in my pocket, I have no need to worry. :)

First fresh raspberries I've seen at the market in Japan in over 15 years.

Around August of every year we see Rainier cherries sell around the United States -- for around $9 a pound.  I read that the ones that make it to Japan go for 100 yen per cherry.

Has the definition of "Upstate NY" changed to "anything that is not part of New York City" since I left the US?

Heartbleed overreaction: pfsense issues a new package "to address heartbleed issues" when they are built on top of an unaffected OS.

Oh, apparently pfsense 2.1 and 2.1.1 did have attack surface. OpenVPN and other add-on packages were bringing in their own 1.0.1 OpenSSL libraries even though the base OS had 0.98.

A good place to stay for a layover when your international flight gets in late with no provincial flights until the next day. Large rooms by local standards for reasonable prices. Close to the airport (P150-200 meter taxi or P330 coupon). Area is relatively sketchy, dark streets at night and surrounded by short-time motels.
