The story behind Settle Up's big release. Fails, wins and lessons learned:

My second Google Assistant app created during a weekend hackathon:
OK Google, ask Settle Up who should pay next

Our old Android version of Settle Up had a special feature: it said who should pay next aloud. It wasn’t used that much, but some users told us that “the voice” was the best feature and that it always entertained the whole group of friends. So, we decided to bring it back and make it Google Assistant-compatible. That means you can use it on any compatible phones, smart speakers, TVs, cars, laptops, headphones, smart displays, and watches.

You don’t have to install anything, just ask your device “OK Google, ask Settle Up who should pay next” or a simpler version “OK Google, talk to Settle Up”. The app tells you who should pay next and what’s the balance of that member. It uses your currently active group based on the Google account you have with the Google Assistant.

Pixelbook - an ideal laptop for Android devs

I was surprised by Android Dev Summit news that Chrome OS will officially support Android Studio. So I bought a top-spec Pixelbook. I was just testing it:
- Android Studio runs without issues and it's fast
- I can test directly on the device: good bye messing with cables and slow emulators
- I have access to all command line tools with the Linux support
- I managed to install other apps made for Linux such as VS Code and GitKraken
- I can use Android apps with no problems, for example I prefer Slack Android app over the web version

So far I don't miss anything - simple and clean UI of Chrome OS with the extensibility via Linux & Android apps makes it an ideal Android developer's device. And at the half price of similar-spec Macbook Pro!

G+ is going away, what next?

I really enjoyed G+:
- Collections is a killer feature, I can share about various topics and if people are not interested in the topic, they can simply unsubscribe the topic (not the whole account)
- Community here was great, less people but free of spam, provocative comments and negativity well known from major social networks
- Support for basic formatting and very clean timeline interface
- No limit for number of characters = if I feel like it, I can keep writing and turn a post into a blog post
- Not so strict alghoritm filtering stuff as on Facebook/Twitter

Do you know about social network with similar properties?

Next steps:
- Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/vavradav
- It looks like Mastodon is number one choice after the major social networks, so I gave it a try as well: https://mastodon.social/@davidvavra
