I researched Costa Rica at length before taking the plunge. First I had to figure out what part(s) of the country I wanted to visit. I heard about the more gringo areas where there are beach bum and surfer types everywhere--really not my thing. I learned about the cloud forests and thought I'd like that if I wanted to go for a real Zen trip and meditate but that wasn't really my objective here. So when I heard about Manuel Antonio and the Manuel Antonio National Park and that the area was as much jungle as park as beach I figured I'd found my home base. So then I had to figure out what kind of hotel to stay in--a quaint little place or a resort. I found out that there were a bunch of variations even in the resorts. There were places that were indistinguishable between a resort in Mexico or even the US, and there were places that were much more authentic resorts with a real Costa Rica experience. I decided on authentic Costa Rican and found the Hotel Si Como No (yes, why not!). Now that I've been back to the states for a couple weeks, I feel my research was well founded--the hotel really is in the middle of the jungle and, frankly, feels like a place that could only be in Costa Rica. That's what I wanted. Ridiculously awesome and friendly staff, and each of the restaurants and pools was just perfect for what I was looking for. No ostentatious rich pukes, just travelers who seemed to want, like me, an authentic Costa Rican experience. I also found out that Hotel Si Como No is part of a hotel chain (Greentique Hotels) that has several other properties with all sorts of different types of experiences. I love the idea of going back and staying at several properties and they gave me a deal if I came back and stayed at a couple of their properties. See you next year!
