Google has finally launched a competitor to Facebook's Parse.com

It looks pretty flexible. What do you think?

+Jason Brown Oh jeez... yeah, that is a pain. I thought it was a) the same thing and b) still around. I guess the concept is still there though...

Update: Wait, wait, wait... the "App Engine backends" they refer to not being confused with are for doing large compute tasks in the background. They aren't at all related to generating APIs and clients... I'm pretty sure the 2012 I/O video I linked is still this product.

Pro Tip for Watching the Olympics Online

You don't have to have Cable to watch the olympics online. You can watch them on nbcolympics.com for 30 minutes at a time. You just have to clear your cookies every 30 minutes and you can watch as much as you want.

I imagine incognito tab in chrome would do the same as well.

Chromecast is now open to developers

Starting today, the Google Cast Software Development Kit (SDK) is available for developers who want to build Chromecast support into their apps and websites.

For the non-developers, that means even more of your favorite movies, TV shows and music will become available on Chromecast over time. Just be on the lookout for the cast button in your favorite apps and websites, and stay up to date about apps that work with Chromecast at chromecast.com/apps.

They pulled a Wii-U and ended up delivering a console before 3rd parties had access to it. Seems like a poor execution on google's part.

Amazing Video of Man Playing with Lions

I've never had a house cat come when I call it. Perhaps I should get a house lion instead.

Great tip

Today’s #AndroidDev #Protip from +Nick Butcher and +Katherine Kuan is on a smoother app launch experience.

On app launch, Android displays a simple preview window (based on your activity theme) as an immediate response to the user action. Then the preview window crossfades with your actual UI, once that has fully loaded. To ensure a smooth visual transition, your activity theme should match your full UI as closely as possible. The below image shows how the experience can be jarring if not handled properly.

For example, if your activity does not require an action bar, then disable it in your theme so that it doesn’t briefly appear in the preview window. To do this, use or extend an activity theme with no action bar. You can also override the background color of the window, if applicable, to better match your full UI.

<style name="AppBaseTheme" parent="android:Theme.Holo.NoActionBar">
    <item name="android:windowBackground">@color/red</item>
</style>

When using an action bar in your activity you can tweak it’s displayOptions such as showing or hiding the title or logo to achieve a smooth app launch. For more info on this refer to the documentation http://goo.gl/G8lJgj & Action Bar API guide http://goo.gl/sSbXNf.

Don’t be tempted to use this functionality to build a splash screen as the preview window is shown whenever the activity is constructed i.e. after configuration changes such as rotating your device; not just on the first app launch.  Do use this to create a smooth experience for your users, minimising jarring transitions. For more info on gorgeous app launching see this blog post http://goo.gl/PR4hCr by +Cyril Mottier.

Lenovo Buys Motorola from Google

"Google will retain ownership of the vast majority of Motorola's patents".

Remember when Google said the Motorola acquisition was about more than patents? Yeah...

They probably got to keep a bunch of talent too, which is more important than patents in my opinion

How do I mirror Glass to a TV?
I'm doing a presentation about Glass and I need to mirror the display to a TV. What's the best way to do that?

(apologies if this has been asked and answered. I couldn't find it here.)

Update: The hackathon was great. We had 4 teams of 6 do presentations and almost every team had a working Glass app at the end of the 30 hours. We used Droid@Screen to demo. Since most of the demos required that Glass wearer to move around we opted to using the Mirroring feature of the MyGlass app so there were no wires directly connected to Glass. This made the lag time almost unbearable but it was the best we could do for the hackathon.
I really wanted to try out MiraCast from the phone (showing Glass) straight to the projector but our projector didn't have HDMI and we didn't have enough adapters to get that to work.

Introduction
I'm a Freelance Android Developer. If you would like to hire me send me a message or email.

On Google+ I will post what I love.

I will not spell everything correctly. I will start sentences with "And". I will use incorrect grammar. I will write run on sentences and use way more words than necessary to explain myself.

I will post things I am passionate about and things that excite me. I will share creative posts from other users. I will have strong opinions and will frequently change them. I will post half-baked ideas and hopes for the future.

I will do this because the Google+ community is fantastic at helping me form ideas and opinions and even the future.

I will post what I love.

This is who I am.
