Why You Need to Know What Lens Your Eye Surgeon Will Implant During Cataract Surgery

Today an intraocular lens (IOL) is almost always placed in the eye at the time of surgery. They are generally considered to be both safe and effective as all IOLs implanted in the USA undergo a rigorous process of evaluation by the FDA. Nonetheless, modern eye surgeons know that not all material choices have proven to be long-lasting. It is possible for the IOL material to degrade after it has been implanted in the eye...

What a privilege to treat Dr. Aristides Barahona, a well respected and loved general surgeon from Honduras! ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ He flew out to have me perform both cataract surgery and canaloplasty. Here we are smiling together in appreciation of his improved vision and pressure just prior to his traveling back home where I know he has many of his own patients anxious for his return.

Standing next to remnants of the Berlin Wall.

It's sobering to read about the tragic separation of East and West Germany by a wall, yet uplifting to see it now in ruins. I am hopeful that we will not see a resurrection of wall building.

ASK DR. DAVID RICHARDSON โค ๐Ÿ“ฉ

Question Sent via Email:
Hi Dr Richardson, in your opinion, which is better: tube shunt or trabeculectomy? I am left with a decision and neither one looks better to me but from what I had been told, they were my only choices left... Trabectome failed and so did Laser. And drops aren't keeping me in a good number.

Dr. Richardson's Answer:
There is no clear โ€œwinnerโ€ in the trabeculectomy vs. glaucoma drainage device face-off. Trabeculectomy seems to provide a slightly greater IOP benefit but at the cost of greater risk.
