Lengthy paper from MIT about online learning, lots of interesting stuff in there but one thing caught my eye was the stress on the importance of 'learning engineers' (something that sounds very similar to a learning technologist)

In January I've been asked to present at the student services management conference on the topic of 'tech tools for better management'. I've got a few ideas of things to present: Trello/Todoist for project/task management; various Google Forms/sheets add-ons such as Formmule and Autocrat for automating form responses but if anyone has got anything else they could suggest, I'd be very happy to hear about it. These need to be focussed on better management/admin procedures rather than teaching related.

We've got a conference coming up this Saturday and wanted to have a Twitter wall up for people to look at. Does anyone know of a  free website that can create a decent, attractive Twitter wall?

twitterfall worked well at telfest. we also used tweetbeam which displays pictures next to the tweets to create a nice pictorial representation

Office 365 for teachers?

I've noticed that if you go to this link on the Shef website (http://www.shef.ac.uk/cics/software/office) and then click on Free Microsoft Office for Students and then enter your staff details on the following page from the student tab, not the teacher one (https://products.office.com/en-GB/student/office-in-education) it still accepts the email and I was able to download and install Office 2016 on my personal computer. Is this just a glitch or are staff entitled to the same access as students, or is it just that there is no way for them to distinguish between staff and student accounts?

I'm not trying to game the system, but if we're entitled to use this, it's great as we can install on several machines and also access the full versions on Mobile devices as well. I just wanted to check if anyone knew as I didn't want it to suddenly stop working.
Application, Function. Office, Includes Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote etc. Project, Project management software. Visio, Software for drawing all types of diagram (e.g. flowcharts, schedules, maps etc). Visual Studio, Programming languages & development tools. Eligibility ...

AFAIK, this offer is available to students and teachers. The only problem is that at the moment, you can only install Office 2013 (not 2016) on PC, but you can install 2016 on Mac. It seems, from what I've read, that this is because the sheffield.ac.uk domain has be be updated at Microsoft to allow 2016.

Nice to see Google Chrome finally available from the Software Centre. Interesting to see if it will support all the browser extensions (screencastify etc)

edit: extensions seem a bit hit and miss, we must be running an earlier version, Screencastify wasn't compatible, couple of others weren't either, luckily Lastpass was (no chance of remembering passwords without it!)

Does anyone know if the University has any licenses for Articulate Storyline 2? We're looking to create some elearning content for online courses and this software seemed ideal. However, it is quite expensive, so wanted to know if we already have access to it in any way.

just to add I  also have the 699 USD quote from Articulate direct and I think they may do an extra discount on 5 licences

I remember finding this website a few years ago and thinking what a great resource it is for academics, students and learning technologists as it details all digital tools available for various academic needs.

The ELTC are hosting a conference in a few weeks time (Saturday 14th Nov) in the Arts Tower and we'd like to have a Twitter wall up for people to  view. Does anyone know if there are any display screens available to use for such events, or would it be better to use a mini-projector or similar?

Wireless mirroring from ipad to mac on university network

I know many of you out there have got macs and ipads, but normally you have to plug in your ipad to a VGA/HDMI adaptor to get screen mirroring.  However, I did just discover a programme (http://www.mirroring360.com/) that allows you to do this wirelessly through your mac and - most importantly - also works on Eduroam (the Apple TV and other apps such as Reflector 2 don't because of the Bonjour protocol). It mirrors your ipad to your mac screen and then through there to the monitor/projector. I took a video of it working on the mac/ipad, there is a slight lag but I think if you are demonstrating apps etc, it probably isn't a big issue.

You do have to pay for the app ($14.99) but there is a seven-day trial to give it a go first. I even tested it out on Adobe Connect screen sharing and it worked, so you could share your ipad screen during a webinar (the lag is a bit longer on that though).

There's even a version for android (download older version) and that seems to work even better. Doesn't seem too expensive for android/ios mirroring, let's see if I can persuade our dept to buy it!

+James Little thanks for that James, didn't realised that had changed (don't have an Apple TV so doesn't affect me too much ;-))
