As always Monster was there to impress and hosted an exciting pop-up event to celebrate the launch of Monster Blaster, the reimagined boombox of the 21st century. The event kicked off with a panel discussion, 'The Evolution and Impact of the Boombox on Pop and Hip Hop Culture"' and concluded with an upbeat breakdance competition featuring New York's hottest breakdance artists. It was a tight competition but Miguel "Gravity" Rosario came out on top, winning $500 and a Monster Blaster.

CE Week honored ten enterprising New York City students from across the five boroughs at the inaugural '10 Under 20: Young Innovators to Watch' awards competition. This year's recipients are already making an impact, taking on real-world Issues and solving them creatively using technology. Their winning projects include everything from a robotic maid to a new way to study visual processing, from a fun educational app to an automatic pill dispenser. These students are also tackling real issues in today's society, such as police brutality, care for our aging population and gender equality in the hacking space.

For the second year, Value Electronics brought its Annual TV Shootout™ to CE Week where a jury composed of professional TV reviewers, certified calibrators, and video enthusiasts convened to crown a "King of TV" for 2016. As the show concluded, LG Electronics' Signature 4K OLED TV was crowned the winner, competing among four contending flagship 4K Ultra HD TV models from LG and other leading brands.

Decibullz Introduces the First-Ever DIY Custom-Molded Wireless Earphones, Perfect for Active Users Who Want Great Sound and a Perfect, Comfortable Fit

NEW YORK and FORT COLLINS, Colo., June 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- from ShowStoppers @ CE Week 2016 -- After a successful Kickstarter campaign, Decibullz Custom Audio introduces its industry-first retail-version, do-it-yourself custom-molded wireless earphones. The earphones are made for mobility and take advantage of the new AptX® high-bandwidth streaming high-quality Bluetooth® system.

Kyle Kirkpatrick, founder and CEO of Decibullz, made it his mission to create a set of earphones that would stay in and stay comfortable for active people: "Our custom-molding technology is an industry-first differentiator, equaled only by our sound engineering, which was done in-house to make sure our earphones have powerful, clear, and perfectly balanced sound combined with exceptional noise isolation. The new earphones are machined out of a solid block of aluminum for superior sound, durability, and quality."

Honoree of a Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Innovation Award for 2016 and winner of USA Today's Reviewed.com Best In-Ear Headphone of 2015, Decibullz use unique thermoplastic custom-fit earpieces to create extremely comfortable, perfect-fitting earphones. When heated in water (using the microwave or the stove), the earpieces soften. Once the mold is allowed to cool to slightly above room temperature, the user then presses the earpiece to their ear, molding it to an exact fit in about four minutes, without the need for an expensive audiologist. "The result is a smooth transition from biological to mechanical. This also keeps the earphones from falling out and eliminates all pressure points," explained Kirkpatrick.

The product development team at Decibullz was guided by their Kickstarter backers to make valuable improvements for the new retail version. The newest Decibullz earpieces are combined with a specially designed state of the art wireless earphone system. Using new wireless technology like AptX®, Decibullz Wireless can deliver full "wired" audio quality. They also feature a new easy-shape system, which can be reheated as many times as needed to achieve the perfect-fitting earphones with universal inline remote and microphone for use with a smartphone. This anatomically inspired, wearable technology represents the future of earphones. In addition, smaller but much appreciated improvements were made, including a longer battery life, shortened cable, and a cord clip—all added per the feedback of the original Kickstarter backers.

"For me, headphones were always uncomfortable, and earphones would always fall out," concluded Kirkpatrick, who is a former gymnast, extreme athlete, and elite gymnastics coach. "Our goal was to create limitless audio, a perfect fitting wireless earphone that enables users to comfortably listen to their mobile device no matter what they are doing. The new wireless version ensures users can listen to what they love while doing what they love!"

The earpieces come in a variety of colors to provide an additional level of style and customization. For more information, to find a retailer near you, or to order Decibullz, visit: www.decibullz.com

About Decibullz:
Decibullz is a brand that caters to people who seek comfort and optimal fit in earphones and earplugs. After extensive research, creator Kyle Kirkpatrick concluded that the only way to fit earphones precisely is to mold them to the exact shape of the user's ear. Decibullz was created to solve this problem with an affordable, quick, and easy solution. Decibullz are the first custom-molded wireless earphones and are simply the most comfortable and best fitting wireless earphones on the market.

Technology could replace cash within 20 years

London's booming financial technology sector drives increase in adoption of fintech products

The UK could become a cashless society within 20 years according to research published by London & Partners, the Mayor of London’s promotional company, to coincide with London Technology Week 2016.1

A survey of more than 2,000 consumers shows that 68 per cent believe that cashless technologies will completely replace physical money by 2036. The figure is higher in London where three quarters of people said they thought cash would disappear within 20 years.

The data is supported by figures showing the rise in contactless payment technologies. New data from MasterCard shows that contactless spending has increased by 326% year-on-year in the UK.

Last week the Bank of England announced that it will be launching a fintech accelerator programme that will work with technology companies to harness fintech innovations. Mark Carney, The Governor of the Bank of England also remarked that “Financial technology companies will change the nature of money, shake the foundations of central banking and “deliver nothing less than a democratic revolution for all who use financial services”

London’s status as a leading financial centre and technology hub has helped the UK to become a global leader for financial technologies. Recent research from EY shows that the UK’s fintech sector generated £6.6 billion in revenue last year and attracted approximately £524m in investment. The fintech sector is also a major employer supporting 61,000 jobs more than in New York, or in Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia combined.

Speaking at an event during London Technology Week on the growth of the capital’s fintech sector, Gordon Innes CEO of London & Partners said: “London is the global leader for fintech. With the world’s leading financial services centre and Europe’s fastest growing technology hub, London’s fintech companies are disrupting the current financial industry and changing the way we interact with money. As a result, they are attracting record levels of investment and world class talent. From peer-to-peer lending companies, such as Funding Circle and Zopa, to remittance companies, such as WorldRemit and TransferWise, London’s fintech companies are pioneering the latest disruptive fintech innovations.”

Also speaking at the event was Elliott Goldenberg, head of digital payments for MasterCard UK & Ireland: “We’re in what we might call a perfect storm for payments right now. There is this virtuous circle of creation and adoption in fintech where tech-savvy consumers and entrepreneurs are feeding from each other. No other market combines the expertise, the captive audience and regulatory infrastructure in this way.”

London is widely recognised as a leading global city for the development and adoption of fintech technologies. Figures from EY’s Fintech Adoption Index show that 25 per cent of digitally active Londoners identify themselves as fintech users compared with 14 per cent across the UK.

The rapid adoption of new payment technologies has been cited by experts as a critical factor in in the flood of investment coming into the UK’s fintech industry.

At Tuesday’s event, MasterCard will unveil the latest intake of fintech start-ups into its global Start Path programme. The UK fintech industry is now so dominant that 25 per cent of all Start Path businesses are British.

These include Everledger, a Whitechapel-based firm that uses blockchain technology to authenticate and certify diamonds and other luxury goods. Another east London business teaming up with MasterCard is Revolut, an app that allows users to seamlessly exchange, send and spend money around the world or online.

Eileen Burbidge, Investor and HM Treasury Fintech Envoy said: “The UK is emerging as the fintech centre of the world and London is the jewel in the crown of the UK’s fintech success story. With record levels of investment, access to talent, a growing culture of entrepreneurship and progressive policy makers and regulators, we have all of the right ingredients for success. I am confident that London leads the likes of Silicon Valley and Wall Street. Unlike the US, the growth of London and the UK’s fintech sector is being boosted by collaboration between key decision makers from the financial services and technology communities, as well as the policy makers in government.”

Kevin Pearce, London Technology Week Event Director, UBM EMEA London added: “We are delighted to see so many fintech events at this year’s London Technology Week. There is a particular trend towards blockchain this year which is great to see as it’s an area that we know our attendee audience is keen to learn more about. Payment technologies and associated innovations are certainly transforming the way that we all operate and so it’s only fitting that the London Technology Week programme addresses this thriving sector.

The consumer research by London & Partners has been released to coincide with an event at London Technology Week, hosted by London & Partners and MasterCard. The event will convene leading figures from financial services and tech, high growth startups, investors, accelerators and other influencers to explore how fintech innovations are transforming our lives and the world economy.

Technology could boost global economic output by $2 trillion by 2020

EMBARGOED 00:01 UK TIME MONDAY 20th JUNE

Robots will outnumber human beings, there will be more driverless cars than traditional vehicles and drones will be used to deliver pizzas to our door. These are just some of the technologies that could transform our lives within the next 20 years according to research released to mark the start of London Technology Week 2016 1.

The findings highlight healthcare as a key industry set for change with Britons predicting that they will no longer visit the doctor when they get ill but will instead consult their GP from home using virtual reality technology. A large number of people also believe that 3D printers will be used to produce human organs, potentially removing the need for human donation, while just under half of those surveyed think the world’s first cloned human will have been born by 20361.

The survey, which was commissioned by London & Partners, the Mayor of London’s promotional company, is inspired by a series of predictions put forward by Imperial College London’s Tech Foresight research team and reveals the technologies consumers think will disrupt traditional industries and drive forward the growth of London’s tech sector.

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “London Technology Week shines a light on this hugely important sector of the economy and demonstrates how our city is open to trade, ideas and people from across the globe. Tech-savvy Londoners welcome new digital advances that are going to revolutionise the way that we live and it is crucial that we harness those ideas to help the capital work even better as a city. As someone who has helped to run a successful business, I look forward to supporting the tech sector so it goes from strength to strength over the coming years.”

The study, which asked over 2000 people a series of questions about how they believed their lives would be transformed by technology also identified fashion as another industry ripe for change, with over half of Britons predicting that we will regularly wear clothing connected to the internet within the next twenty years1.

Other findings from the SMG Insight/YouGov survey include:

37% of Brits think commercial space flights could take off from major airports
23% of Brits think the first artificial intelligence (‘AI’) machine could serve on the board of big companies
19% of Brits think avatar girlfriends and boyfriends could be commonplace
37% of Brits think communications devices will be embedded inside the human body
Professor David Gann, Vice President Innovation at Imperial College London said: “London’s technologists, scientists, medics and entrepreneurs are creating the future. No city in the world enjoys London’s quotient of talent, technology culture and capital. It is a potent combination.

“London is an environment where ideas flourish, design and innovation is embraced and new technologies are transforming our lives for the better. In London, we don’t stand still. Through our Tech Foresight team, Imperial Business Partners is taking some of the world’s finest minds from business and academia to predict how whole industries will transform within two decades. By considering breakthrough discoveries taking place in labs today, they help businesses look ahead to tech-driven trends and markets that will shape our future.”

London Technology Week is a celebration of the entrepreneurs, innovators and companies making the city’s thriving tech hub one of the best in the world. A recent report from EY ranked London as second only to Silicon Valley as the most likely place to produce the world’s next tech giant.

London’s tech community is also recognised as the most diverse in the UK, with early findings from research to be released in full later this week by technology recruitment firm Mortimer Spinks and ComputerWeekly.com revealing that London is the best location in the UK for women to build their businesses. However, further analysis of the findings suggest there is still a lot of work to be done, with more than half reporting less than 15 percent of their tech teams are female 2

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has stated that he wants the tech sector to be open to all Londoners and aims to reverse the under-representation of women by encouraging more females to work in the industry.

Eileen Burbidge MBE, Partner at Passion Capital and Chair of Tech City UK said: “As a truly international city, London is one of the world’s largest, most inclusive and diverse technology hubs with a range of opportunities for talent of all backgrounds. The breadth, depth and creativity of our expansive talent pool has helped London to become a world leader in areas such as fintech, e-commerce and cyber security, just to name a few. We are already seeing technology disrupting traditional industries, but in years to come we will no longer be talking about the digital tech sector in isolation. Technology and digital will be integrated into every part of the economy.”

This year’s London Technology Week will focus on London as a centre for the convergence of disruptive technologies and their impact on traditional industries such as fashion, music, financial services and healthcare.

Gordon Innes CEO of London & Partners said: “London is a world-class destination for culture, science, business and technology. When you combine this with our strong culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, London has the perfect conditions for the convergence of disruptive technologies with traditional industries. From fashion to financial services, London’s technology businesses are at the forefront of developing the cutting edge technologies which are creating growth for the city’s economy and have cemented London’s status as one of the world’s leading technology hubs.”

Kevin Pearce, London Technology Week Event Director, UBM EMEA London added:

With over 300 events taking place across the capital, London Technology Week 2016 is as much a celebration of London’s leading role in the ‘here-and-now’ of our digitally driven economy, as is it about looking to the future. It is about recognising the next wave of technologies that will redefine our world. About creating a growth environment for innovators, researchers and developers. And about connecting the entire tech ecosystem to drive the UK’s development as a fully connected digital society. With events covering everything from autonomous vehicles and smart homes, to advanced robotics and AI, London Technology Week offers a unique environment of live events, face to face networking, discovery and learning.

The launch event will also include a first of its kind fashion technology showcase and a selection of innovations from Imperial College London students.

McLaren will also showcase their Formula 1 car and talk about the convergence at the heart of their rapidly growing McLaren Applied Technologies arm that takes insights from racing to create high performance in other sectors.

Ian Rhodes, chief executive of McLaren Applied Technologies said: “McLaren is foremost about innovation. Using insights, ideas and capabilities hot housed in the competitive world of motor racing, we create step-changes in performance across other sectors. We take, for example, the approach used by our F1 strategists to make the best call during a race and work with KPMG to apply it to predicting the financial health of companies. That kind of innovation is crucial to the reputation of London as one of the world’s financial centres. Being plugged into the talent pool that London has to offer is vitally important to us as we’re now competing with the likes of Silicon Valley for the best and brightest tech talent rather than just the traditional engineering roles people would normally associate with McLaren.”

Separate research from Accenture Strategy recently revealed the impact of digital on the global economy. The Digital Disruption: The Growth Multiplier report estimates that the digital economy currently represents 22.5 per cent of the world economy. By optimising the use of digital skills and technologies, global economic output could be boosted by $2 trillion by 2020. For the United Kingdom specifically, that could mean an additional £58 billion in economic output by 2020.

The report also highlighted the impact of digital across a range of industries. In the United Kingdom, the industries that currently have the largest percentage of digital output include Business Services (ranking at 56 percent), followed by Financial Services (54 percent), and Communications (49 percent)3.

“Digital is unchartered territory, steeped in unknowns, which can feel uncomfortable for risk-averse leaders who have always done things in a particular way. But those ways are no longer delivering. Just like digital disruptors are paving new paths and making up the rules as they go, large incumbents have the opportunity to do so too,” said Bruno Berthon, managing director, digital strategy global lead, Accenture Strategy. “Traditional industry incumbents can pivot to digital by adopting a start-up mentality, embracing a platform-based business model, developing a partner ecosystem, focusing on delivering new value to customers and getting comfortable with trial and error.”

London Technology Week 2016 will see a record number of events take place across the capital from 20-26th June. Hundreds of international companies and tens of thousands of visitors will come to London to take part in more than 300 events organised as part of London Technology Week.

CREATe Festival investigates copyright in a digital world

The Royal Society of Arts in London is showcasing on 24 June (this Friday) research findings by CREATe, the UK Centre for Copyright and New Business Models in the Creative Economy. There will be policy debates and expert panels that explore the future of the creative economy, the interface of digital innovation and legal regulation, and in particular the role of copyright law. You can take part in behavioural experiments, attend a workshop on fashion IP, learn more about art forgery, or interact with fellow online video creators in a meet-up. There will a hackathon video presentation as well as the launch of CREATe’s very own tartan!

The Festival has partnered with London Technology Week, a series of events taking place throughout London that celebrates and connects innovators from leading R&D centres, tech businesses, universities and specialist hubs.

Martin Kretschmer, Professor of IP Law at the University of Glasgow, and Director of CREATe, says: “The creative industries (which include very diverse sectors, such as music, publishing, news, games, film, TV and radio) face a radical challenge. All online behaviour is potentially observable, and whoever controls this data infrastructure will have a stake in the creative economy that is very different from the role of earlier cultural intermediaries.”

“CREATe's core concern is the future of creative production, and in particular the relationship between law and digital innovation. What is the role of copyright, among alternative modes of identification, appropriation and finance? Some see copyright as salvation, some as the enemy of innovation. CREATe’s research programme addresses this faultline.”

Key findings from CREATe research for the creative economy include:

CREATe’s research demonstrates that sectors of the creative economy face very different challenges. ‘Born digital’ firms (such as games developers or social media) behave very differently than the owners of back catalogues of rights (eg in music or film) that are being challenged by new ‘platform’ intermediaries.
The labour market for some primary creators has become more difficult, for example for journalists and photographers, but commercial success has always been the exception. There are continuities in the dynamics of cultural production and consumption, and the supply of creative content overall has increased.
There is tension between emerging empirical evidence and entrenched beliefs. Even perfectly enforced copyright law is not a safeguard against technological change, and it can be a serious obstacle to innovation.
Highlights at the CREATe Festival on 24 June include:

1. A keynote speech on copyright reform by Julia Reda, an MEP for the German Pirate Party and rapporteur on a parliamentary review of the Copyright Directive. Her keynote comes a day after the referendum and is likely to include references to the result and its impact on Europe's copyright regime.

2. A session on the role of intermediaries on freedom of expression and human rights. The panellists will look at the role of social media platforms in policing copyright infringement and at the impact of blocking orders and takedown requests.

3. A keynote speech by John Kay (FT/LSE) on rent seeking in the digital economy – and the likely beneficiaries of it.

The full schedule for the event is at http://festival.create.ac.uk/

On the eve of the Festival, CREATe has published a legacy report titled “CREATe 2012-2016: Impact on society, industry and policy through research excellence and knowledge exchange” (edited by Kerry Patterson & Sukhpreet Singh).
