Nine Years Ago Today -- Wyoming.

Two weeks before my "Gone to See America 2006 Trip" I got my first DSLR camera (a Nikon D200, based on a recommendation from my brother) and two lenses. I admit I didn't know how to use the camera, and the manual was not much help. As soon as I got back from the trip I knew I needed to learn a lot more. Even back then I could tell that there was good and really bad information on the web. The book that +Thom Hogan put out for the D200 was much more helpful than the Nikon manual supplied with the camera. I also joined Nikonians and attended several workshops.

Today is a couple of before and after images. When I went on the "Gone to See America 2006 trip" I didn't know any better, and only saved JPG images -- which meant there was much less information available later for reprocessing. Since that trip I only saved the RAW image data. You need to look at the full images to see the difference of nine years of better programs, and better knowledge of how to reprocess images (and this was using the out of the camera JPG image, not the full RAW image data which I didn't have). I have to admit since then I have saved every image -- good, bad, and ugly. You learn from the bad and ugly. Never know when a new program will be developed to convert it to something useful. You also get ideas if you ever go back to the same location.

I hope to hear from viewers if they do see a difference in these images.

Images from . Today -- New Jersey.

There will be two sets of backyard summer nature. The first group will be some very small wildflowers, a grass stalk, and thistle flowers and seed pods. My eyes are healing after cataract surgery, and I am getting better used to being out in the sun.

African Tuesday -- Spring.

Farmer Harvesting Wheat the Old Fashioned Way in the Atlas Mountain Region of Morocco. Semester at Sea Field trip in the spring of 2013. Image taken with a Nikon 1 V2 camera and 10-100 mm VR lens (ISO 160, 24 mm, f/5, 1/250 sec). I am assuming that since Morocco is north of the equator this is still considered spring (06-May-2013) in that part of Africa.

I actually have a whole series of images from a cooking school from the same region on that day if you are interested. And the food was really good. http://davidmathre.photoshelter.com/gallery/Atlas-Mountains/G0000R91ZA_GqsOw/

Images from . Today -- New Jersey.

The second set of backyard summer nature. Butterflies, Clearwing Butterfly Moths, Praying Mantis (that just missed catching a Clearwing Butterfly Moth for Lunch), and a Bee. They were all on thistle flowers. I missed most of the butterfly and clearwing butterfly moth season while having my cataract surgery. My eyes are healing, I am seeing better, and now finally getting used to being out in the sun.

Bird Poker -- Underbrush.

Three Young Wild Turkeys Grazing in My Backyard in New Jersey Three Summers Ago. They are small so the clovers can be considered as underbrush. Image taken with a Nikon D800 and 500 mm f/4 VR lens (ISO 800, 500 mm, f/4, 1/250 sec). I saw a turkey this morning eating some seed knocked over from a bird feeder in my front yard. Unfortunately, the camera was not in my hand because I was going out to clean up the mess from the damaged bird feeder (the third lost to a bear this season).
