Oregon is one state that allows you to seal many misdemeanor and low level felony convictions after a waiting period.  Often times, an arrest that does not result in a conviction may be sealed as well.  The process can take several months to accomplish so its best to seek an "expungement" as soon as you're eligible.
Many people who have never faced charges, or have had charges dropped, find that a lingering arrest record can ruin their chance to secure employment, loans and housing.

This article from JAMA Psychiatry echos what I've seen in my practice over the past few years:  "[T]he demographic composition of heroin users entering treatment has shifted over the last 50 years such that heroin use has changed from an inner-city, minority-centered problem to one that has a more widespread geographical distribution, involving primarily white men and women in their late 20s living outside of large urban areas."

The JAMA's study further concludes:  "Part of this increase in heroin use and apparent migration to a new class of users appears to be due to the coincidental increase in the abuse of prescription opioids over the last 20 years, arguably accelerated by the release of OxyContin in the mid-1990s, which made large quantities of oxycodone hydrochloride readily available for inhalation and intravenous injection. Given that prescription opioids are legal, are prescribed by a physician, and are thus considered trustworthy and predictable (eg, the dose is clearly specified on a distinctive tablet or pill), many users viewed these drugs as safer to use than other illicit substances."

Sadly, these prescription opioids have provided us with a new generation of addicts.

Sometimes, as a condition of probation, you're required to complete a quantity of community service.  If the court allows you to do community service through a non-profit organization some options in the Portland area are set out in the link below.

Oregon courts do NOT allow community service to be done "online" so don't fall for that scam.  Failure to do court ordered community service will result in jail time.   #communityservice

What happened to you America?  You used to be cool.
A federal law that aims to curb childhood obesity means that, in dozens of states, bake sales must adhere to nutrition requirements that could replace cupcakes and brownies with fruit cups and granola bars.

A tip of the cap to Google.  What the Oregon Legislative Assembly couldn't or wouldn't do, Google has accomplished.  Many of my client's have already benefited.  An end is in sight to #mugshotextortion

Ever wonder why some law firms have scores of five star reviews even though they've been in business only for a couple of years?
A yearlong investigation by New York regulators has resulted in the most comprehensive crackdown to date on deceptive reviews on the Internet.

+Susan Karcher Unless they have a complete zero tolerance policy it shouldn't.  Its only a misdemeanor and doesn't involve violence, dishonesty etc.  Lot's of people have DUI's and it doesn't effect most.

Effective July 1, 2013, convictions for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana will no longer result in a six month license suspension for persons 18 years of age and older.  Senate Bill 82.
