This week in ethanol . . .
Coaching major college football is among the most stressful, pressure filled jobs on planet Earth.  It makes being a physician or a lawyer seem like a walk in the park.  You absolutely cannot function at a high level in such a job with a substance abuse problem.  Here's hoping Steve Sarkisian get's himself right and comes back better than ever.
Luke Gatti showed us how it only takes 9 minutes, an empty stomach, and an ample amount of ethanol to ruin your future employment prospects.  Fortunately, what we do at 19 doesn't define us.  Unfortunately, the internet has a long memory.

The city of Portland was one of the last communities to ban the sale of street urchins in city parks. These kindergartners seemed happy to find new families, all except the boy fifth from the left.

There's not much doubt as to your guilt when you upload a video of your homicide on your twitter page and state your motive.  Screen shot of Bryce Williams' (Vester Flanagan) twitter page moments before it was taken down.

Can you identify the offensive cocktail from this central Oregon restaurant's menu? Hint: it helps to be over 50 or from the south.

Oregon is one state that allows you to seal many misdemeanor and low level felony convictions after a waiting period.  Often times, an arrest that does not result in a conviction may be sealed as well.  The process can take several months to accomplish so its best to seek an "expungement" as soon as you're eligible.

This article from JAMA Psychiatry echos what I've seen in my practice over the past few years:  "[T]he demographic composition of heroin users entering treatment has shifted over the last 50 years such that heroin use has changed from an inner-city, minority-centered problem to one that has a more widespread geographical distribution, involving primarily white men and women in their late 20s living outside of large urban areas."

The JAMA's study further concludes:  "Part of this increase in heroin use and apparent migration to a new class of users appears to be due to the coincidental increase in the abuse of prescription opioids over the last 20 years, arguably accelerated by the release of OxyContin in the mid-1990s, which made large quantities of oxycodone hydrochloride readily available for inhalation and intravenous injection. Given that prescription opioids are legal, are prescribed by a physician, and are thus considered trustworthy and predictable (eg, the dose is clearly specified on a distinctive tablet or pill), many users viewed these drugs as safer to use than other illicit substances."

Sadly, these prescription opioids have provided us with a new generation of addicts.
