There is a population of blue whales that don't migrate - they live their entire lives off the coast of Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, they're habitat and livelihood is being threatened by shipping and increasing incidents of ship strike.

Fortunately, Asha de Vos' research is helping us understand how to help. She's crowdfunding support for her research. You can (and should) support her here:

Saving blue whales from ship-strike in the Indian Ocean! January 9, 2015. Watch. My mission is to reduce blue whale death by ship-strike in the Indian Ocean. I want to use standard survey methods to verify habitat models that tell us where the whales are most at risk from ships, add photos to ...

When Bad Things Happen to Good Robots

This piece is the closest I've come to describing the future we sense is unfolding with OpenROV (and beyond). I tried my best, but still feel like I couldn't quite capture the thrill.
The submersible explorer I built is more than a machine to me

It's interesting to see how drones and other maker tools are working  their way into the field. Makers are becoming scientists, and scientists becoming makers.

Here's a video from my trip into the Mojave dessert. The full story is here:

The Accidental Ecologist

Laura James is a force of nature. And a force for nature. We're entering a new era of connected exploration where individuals can discover and learn about their planet, and then mobilize around issues that matter.

Citizen science becomes civic science.

Great write up of the new OpenROV v2.7 as well as OpenExplorer in WIRED this morning!

http://www.wired.com/2014/11/citizen-explorers-meet-new-submersible/
Underwater exploration has traditionally been an exclusive endeavor, accessible only to deep-pocketed adventurers or researchers backed by government scientific agencies. But with the recent rise of citizen science and low-cost, open-source tools, the boundaries to underwater exploration are rapidly being degraded. OpenROV has been leading the charge since 2012, offering low-cost (sub-$1000) submersibles and sparking…

"Remember discovery? I don't mean finding the latest indie rock bands or articles you might like on the Internet. I'm talking about the word in its original, pre-buzzword sense: Exploring unknown parts of the physical world.

The age-old practice is being revitalized by a budding online community--and their pet robots."
A platform for robotic exploration from the creators of OpenROV.
