5 years ago I became a Google Top Contributor, which has enabled me to help thousands of people with everything from Google Chrome to the latest and greatest, such as Google Home, Google Pixel and Android Auto. It has also allowed me to travel to some beautiful places and to meet some of the most humble, knowledgeable and friendly people I have ever met and for that I couldn’t be more grateful.

Technology is constantly evolving, which ensures that someone somewhere will always be searching for answers. Half a decade later (where did that go?!) Google communities receive over 900,000 questions a year, 85% of which receive a response within 24 hours!

From preventing critical bugs from reaching the product to the simple act of helping someone regain access to their account, I’m so proud of our community.

Here’s to the next 5 years in the +Google Top Contributor Program!

Save the day, one answer at a time

Very interesting post from the YouTube engineering team that shows how YouTube works to provide the best looking video at the lowest bandwidth!
How YouTube works to provide the best looking video at the lowest bandwidth

When you watch a video the YouTube player measures the bandwidth on the client and adaptively chooses chunks of video that can be downloaded fast enough, up to the limits of the device’s viewport, decoding, and processing capability. YouTube makes multiple versions of each video at different resolutions, with bigger resolutions having higher encoding bitrates.

If it's working right, there should be less buffering for a smoother viewing experience.

Not surprisingly, YouTube has found that reducing the bandwidth used by HD video has increased watch time.

Google One is here!

A shareable plan giving you access to expanded storage, access to Google experts and more.
Google One is now available: direct support for Google products, share storage with your family group, special promotional benefits

Check - if you paid for Google Drive storage and you are in the US, it is (or will be) active for you.

Learn more about Google One storage and how sharing works

I have $19.99 100GB storage per year. That is now shared with my family group (one member is a second Google account of mine). Everyone in the group also has access to Google support, and special benefits (currently a hotel discount). There is also a Google Play Store credit that can only be claimed by one person in the group.

Everyone with Google One has a rainbow circle around their profile photo while signed in on Google.

Create a family group

* Invite up to 5 people/Google accounts - there is one Family Manager, Family Members, and Parents (to supervise under-13 children).

* All members must be in the same country as you

* Can't create a family group using a G suite account

* You can only be a member of one family group

* What you can use the family group for:
- Family Google Calendar
- Share with family group on Google Photos and Google Keep
- Google One shared storage
- Family payment method in the Google Play Store
- Google Play family library
- Google Play Music family subscription
- YouTube TV family subscription
- YouTube Premium family subscription

(Note: I'm in the US, and some of these options may but be available in all countries. Google One is currently US only, for users with paid Google Drive plans)

Sunsetting inline installation of Chrome extensions

Large volumes of complaints are still received about unwanted extensions causing users' Chrome experience to change unexpectedly and the majority of these complaints are attributed to confusing or deceptive uses of inline installation on websites. Later this summer, inline installation will be retired on all platforms. Going forward, users will only be able to install extensions from within the Chrome Web Store, where they can view all information about an extension’s functionality prior to installing.

Inline install disabled for all new extensions and users will be automatically redirected to the Chrome Web Store to complete the installation.

September 12, 2018
Inline installation will be disabled for existing extensions, and users will be automatically redirected to the Chrome Web Store to complete the installation.

Early December 2018
The inline install API method will be removed from Chrome 71.

Changes coming to the security indicators in Chrome

Since all HTTP pages will soon be marked as “not secure”, Google will now step towards removing Chrome’s positive security indicators so that the default unmarked state is secure. This will roll out over time, starting by removing the “Secure” wording and HTTPS scheme in September 2018 (Chrome 69). In October 2018 (Chrome 70), Chrome will start showing the red “not secure” warning when users enter data on HTTP pages.

Google will soon require OEMs to regularly deliver security updates

We’ve also worked on building security patching into our OEM agreement. Now this will really lead to a massive increase in the number of devices, and users, receiving regular security patches.

It’s unclear what "regular security patches" means so this is interesting...
