Finding my flow

It takes a while to get into a zone or flow where work just 'happens'.  Just wrapped a session while at a Disney resort cafeteria.  I am 'stuck' here as a 7 day vacation turned into an 11 day vacation thanks to Snowzilla.  Trap, Electronica and other instrumentals always seem to get me in the zone faster despite my surroundings.

Cloud Hopping

If you have your app tied to one Cloud vendor that is still a single point of failure as many companies keep finding out. Ideally, you would be able to #cloudhop  (trying to make this a thing) when one cloud goes down you can fall back to another cloud. So, if Amazon goes down you can switch to Google or Microsoft's Azure and so on.

Netflix developed a tool that allow you to realize cloud hopping and worked with Google to open source their tool Spinnaker.

Android Wear Together Watch Face

Clever Title.  I know.  I tried out the Together watch face some weeks ago.  Interesting watch face that allows you to share emojis, pics, and what you are up to like driving or running.

I think this is one of those things that won't take off until enough folks that normally would stay in touch during the day start using it.

But more importantly, where did the Kid 'n Play picture come from? Not sure how it became my watch face, maybe I sent it or +Noble Ackerson  sent it to me.

Anyway, here you go:

Training

"People at McDonald's get trained for their positions, but people with far more complicated jobs don't. It makes no sense." -Ben Horowitz

This quote resonated with me.  It seems so obvious that in building complex software we should have training  but often there is none.  Most likely, there are a handful of folks who spend their free time learning about new technologies and teaching themselves.

Technology moves quickly.  Even more so now. Ask a front end developer what their tool set is currently. Then ask again next week.  You are likely to get a different answer.

I see software teams spending time with meetings and code reviews dealing with issues that a developer should just "know".

They train people at McDonald's....so we should be training folks on our team which in the long term helps everyone.

How?

I like conducting a "Brown Bag" meetings where a topic is presented like "Automated Acceptance Testing".  They can be as short as 15 minutes.

Think your peers are not up to your level?  Well you are part of the problem.  Sounds harsh.  But wouldn't be better if more developers on your team knew what you know? Just like everyone can make the fries at McDonald's.

Hamster Wheel

Manual treadmill. The faster you run the faster you go. Slowing down is easy, just slow down. It takes a little time to get used to but it was fun sprinting on a treadmill. This reminds of the Jacob's ladder.

It's Liquid Metal Alloy

Promises. The Turing makes big ones: Unbreakable. Unhackable.

Oh and they are working on their own 'artifical consciousness', so basically this is Skynet alpha 0.0.1
