I couldn't be prouder of the management team at +Calcbench Inc.  a fintech/open data startup in which I've invested, for this fine recognition by the #CFA Institute blog. If you analyze publicly traded #stocks for a living, or you're a corporate officer who needs to benchmark your own public company against others, go get a free trial.
XBRL promises to change your life as a research analyst and the founders of Calcbench tell you how.

Proud of +Pranav Ghai and all my friends at advisee startup +Calcbench Inc. for this second attributed use of their data analytic tools by WSJ reporter Theo Francis, who clearly "gets" the power of fintech open data.
Large companies across the U.S. are gearing up to increase capital spending, and the new business investment could give another boost to the strengthening U.S. economy.

Congrats to my friends at Calcbench for attribution to their in WSJ story on aggressive corporate tax claims http://ow.ly/G6ftF #bigdata #fintech #opendata
Buried in U.S. companies’ securities filings is an indicator for how aggressively they are working to shield their income from the IRS and other tax authorities.

I've perceived the same worsening and wondered the same thing, John. Schwartz's mobility plan will offer some exemptions based on the smart capability of EZ pass like devices, such as repeated access during the same day. It would be worth looking at (or your asking Schwartz) what the impact on Uber drives is expected to be.

Thanks. I'm hip-high in book-writing. I have passed this along to Transportation Alternatives to see if they want to study this.

What about security? Some of the NAS systems promote access from the Internet without port-forwarding. Can you take advantage of that option if you are hosting on a computer and just storing on a NAS?

+David Hochman Since the NAS storage is internal the plea server is the only thing you need to access from the outside. I don't have outside access to my NAS devices enabled (I access them through a VPN) but I can hit the plex server which then pulls its media from the NAS.

ITAC, where I'm on the board, has a great new website outlining services for NYC manufacturers http://itac.nyc .

ITAC is the NYC affiliate of the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership, acting as sub-recipient to the NYSTAR division of Empire State Development.

Having a good strategic fit with the locale where you start up is at least as important to entrepreneurs and investors as low cost. Unfortunately, regions other than Silicon Valley, Boston and NYC tend to market themselves strictly on low cost of labor. This is not only a mistake, in my opinion, but also puts entrepreneurs like this in the position of complaining about inability to hire the necessary talent. As a good (great!) economist, you know that this complaint makes no sense absent specification of the wage they are willing to pay. If they're in a low-cost frame of mind because of their decision to locate in Philly, they may simply not be willing to pay what the market bears for the talent they need. A focus on strategic fit ought to fix this. Second and third-tier markets, I tell my clients, ought to focus not on marketing low wages but on low cost of living, which makes everyone's compensation go further. BTW, nice redesign on the blog!

Thanks, David. Leadnomics ought to be able to pick up local student interns easily and persuade them to stay on, but it may find it hard to lure away experienced staff from companies in (higher-priced) cities with more tech jobs. Without knowing much about who their competitors are, I think Leadnomics is onto a good thing. As a consumer, I find it very difficult to get good information on insurance companies other than the NJ-based A.M. Best's data on companies' ability to pay. I do want my insurer to be able to pay, and so I have settled on Chubb and their claims people are a pleasure to deal with. But I wish I had a better information on my options. I would guess that insurance companies and agents are more likely than consumers to pay services from Leadnomics - to address their the challenges of (1) developing new products to address needed risks and (2) finding the consumers who will buy these products.
