Nature Neuroscience published "Whole genome sequencing resource identifies 18 new candidate genes for autism spectrum disorder" (http://www.nature.com/neuro/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nn.4524.html) this week, with initial analysis of the first 5,205 genomes in the MSSNG database of genomes from families with autism. The data is available to all qualified researchers, published in Google Cloud along with exploration tools. The Google Genomics team has been supporting MSSNG with cloud storage and analysis technology from the early days of the project.

I'm going to med school. Sort of.

Many of us in the world of data science want to make a difference in human health, and are confident we bring powerful tools to the table. The more we understand about the world of healthcare, the more likely we are to help medical experts use those tools wisely.

The theory and practice of medicine, from science to technology to business to interpersonal relationships, is incredibly complex. That's partly for good reasons and partly the result of accumulated historical accidents. I've been fortunate to be part of a Harvard Medical School program that's providing a taste of the medical world to people like me from the data world. This article describes what we're doing.

(And I have a cameo in the video :)

Had dinner tonight at Study in Cambridge -- they're trying out a new way to deliver the check. Those are glasses of toasted marshmallow milk, a bowl full of rocks (three of which are edible chocolate-covered graham cracker things, but only three), and a rolled up smoldering piece of paper, with the check inside it.

We were wondering how they kept the check itself from burning -- seems like they haven't quite figured that part out yet.

A nice overview of the MSSNG project, showing how families, scientists, and Google are working together to better understand autism.

Parent: want to come refrigerator shopping with us?
Teenage son: nope; I'm fine with whatever, as long as it has food in it.

The worlds of life science and data science are coming together, and as often happens with fusion, the results are exciting and messy. Here's a recent short paper I wrote on the opportunities and obstacles we face.

Thanks to the many people I mention who are building the future, from Dremel to DeepMind to Drop-seq.
