I'm an IT consultant. I sometimes volunteer to help people out. Recently I tried to help a Church volunteer use his Charter network at home to upload his video to Youtube. Argh, the experience was nothing but an epic fail over several days. This fellow's home network couldn't stay connected long enough (appallingly, for the hours required) to upload the file. So, by virtue of his being a Charter customer I thought ,well, perhaps they'd help him get it done ASAP while they dispatch to fix his network. NOT SO. Lacking local contact info, I phoned customer service .. which is in the Midwest somewhere. I met with resistance and essentially uncaring bureaucracy. I was asking: Where can he go to get it done? Is there a local Charter office he might visit? Wouldn't it be okay to forget the "no visitors" issue in this one case? Let him in, upload the file. And then, go fix his internet connection later -- like next week or whenever Charter could get a truck and tech to his home? I interpret Charter's answer in this way: "A Charter home internet connection is a toy appropriate for exchanging Email. If you want 'real internet access' take your notebook computer to Starbucks at Safeway." Sorry, I'm truly sorry -- but this kind of customer service shouldn't exist.
