Hello Sunshine: Jenny Zelinka

Summer is almost over, but gorgeous Jenny brings the sunshine with her whenever she gets in front of a camera. We shot this collection with in Walnut Creek, California earlier in the summer.

Cuba Libre: Celebration of Spanish Caribbean Fashion.

I love shooting in the Caribbean, and make a point of visiting and shooting 2-3 times each year. While a large part of the Caribbean island states have English as their primary language, there are some that are Dutch, French, and of course, Spanish.

Cuba has a rich hybrid culture that embraces some of the most vivid and gorgeous colors. Cuba Libre is a cocktail that is made from Cuban rum. The fashion trend that borrows its name from the drink has grown in popularity over the last year.

Nicola Ifill, a Trinidadian fashion designer now living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area, developed the concept for the shoot, styled it, and of course was the model.

Olga: Ready for the Miss Russian San Francisco 2016 Crown

Here is Olga's official portrait for the Miss Russian San Francisco 2016 pageant. She is one of the final contestants (delegates) chosen. I've always enjoyed photographing her, and welcomed the opportunity to shoot her pageant portraits. We wish her well.

Cuba Libre: A Celebration of Spanish Caribbean Fashion

I visit and shoot fashion projects 2-3 time a year in the Caribbean. While a large part of the Caribbean island states have English as their primary language, there are a few that speak Dutch, French, and of course, Spanish. Cuba embodies a hybrid culture that draws from its Spanish, African, and other influences.

Cuba Libre is a rich cocktail that is made from a base of Cuban rum. The fashion trend that borrows its name from the drink has grown in popularity over the last year. I worked with San Francisco based Caribbean fashion model and stylist, Nicola Ifill, to create our own Cuba Libre collection. Here's a sample.

During my recent visit to the Garden City (Georgetown, Guyana), I had the opportunity to photograph this wonderfully talented model (and medical student), Joy Oluwantomi, on a couple occasions. My colleague, Trinidadian photographer Maurice Goddard, and I had a great time shooting in the city that's a mix of urban architecture and tropical flora.

The Magic of Convergence: Guyana Meets Nigeria

I was especially excited to spend some time in Guyana recently. I had the opportunity to photograph this gorgeous Nigerian model (who is also a medical student), along with this and other fashion pieces by designer Quinton Pearson. We met and shot the project at the famous Georgetown Seawall, on an overcast and partly rainy day. But the circumstances only provided fodder for a creative shoot I will cherish for a long time to come.

Model: Joy Oluwatomi
Agency: STORM TALENT AGENCY
MUA: Renee Chester of Bromeliad
Designer: Quinton Pearson
Fashion Assistant: Orin Lambert
Photography Assistants: Maurice Goddard & Delano Williams

Beautiful People, Beautiful Places: A Decade of Digital Photography

I was sharing with a couple fellow photographers recently that this summer marks 13 years since I purchased my first Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera. I had been shooting with film cameras for several years before that.

Since that time, I've shot with many DSLRs - a few as primary bodies, others as backups. Among them were the Canon EOS Digital Rebel, Canon EOS 5D, Nikon D70, Nikon D200, Nikon D300(s), Nikon D7000, Nikon D610, Nikon D700, Nikon D750, Nikon D800, Nikon D810, and Nikon D500. Each body brought its own uniqueness to my photography.

Here's a video I created, which includes images shot by ALL of the cameras mentioned above. They are drawn from a 10 to 11-year period, covering 2005 to the present. Enjoy!

My "Fashion & Portrait Photographer's Perspective on the D500" is about a week to ten days from completion. However, there is an ancillary issue that I think is worth noting, so much so, I've posted a blog on the subject. It has to do with Nikon's software. But in this case Nikon's poor software has a serious impact on the functionality of the D500. Check out the blog post for details.
SnapBridge illustrates how poor Nikon is at developing software. In this case, poor software also hobbles its newest DSLR camera, the D500.

Here's a favorite from last season's swimsuit collection. It's always a pleasure shooting with this fabulous young model. Be on the lookout for a delightful collection recently shot with her in studio.

Caribbean Sunshine: I’ve spent the past two weeks shooting in the beautiful Garden City, Georgetown, Guyana, and in the Eastern Caribbean’s Trinidad & Tobago. Here’s a sample image from a shoot done on Trinidad’s north coast yesterday. The location is Tyrico Bay, near the famous Maracas Beach. The gorgeous model is Shari, a Trinidadian native. Great times!
