Oculus Rift is awesome. Minecraft is awesome. Why does Facebook have to stick their nose in everything?

Today I participated in a great Q&A session via video conference with Greg Gillespie's "History and Culture of Role-Playing Games" class at Brock University. My favorite moment was when a student explained that she read my book, but didn't understand why I talked about D&D players being regarded as nerds and weirdos. "I don't get it," she said. "What's so geeky?"

How cool is that? Gaming and fantasy fiction have become so mainstream that college students have a hard time imagining it as an outsider activity. Also: How amazing is it that there are college classes about role-playing games, and people who have never played an RPG are taking them?

it is awesome to hear that she asked 'what's so geeky?', but I can't help but think she does not have a great awareness of the public mindset.
it reminds me of something I read from an AD&D 2nd Edition book, Campaign SourceBook & Catacomb Guide(not a very popular handbook, published 1990)

"Adventure gaming attracts—how shall we say it?—a unique type of person as a player. Anyone who prefers to spend a Friday night pretending to slay dragons and sling mighty magics is not the type who fits the so-called "normal" mold."

Even TSR was trying to label it's audience as 'geeks'.
Times have changed....and thankfully because of things like google hangouts and roll20, I play AD&D with the same guys i played with 20 years ago.

All hail the 'what's so geeky' question.

I'm very excited to appear on two great panels at this year's PAX East. On Saturday afternoon at 3PM, come see me talk role-playing games with Ethan Gilsdorf and Jon Peterson in "Why D&D Is Still Awesome: A 40th Anniversary Dungeons & Dragons Tribute." And Saturday at 7:30PM, I'll be moderating a fantastic Geek & Sundry panel with Ashly Burch, Jesse Cox, Clinton Jones and Meghan Camerena!  Come and say hi if you're at either event --and if you can't make it to the show, you can watch the Geek & Sundry panel live on Twitch!
You can follow the action from one of the world's biggest gaming conventions even if you’re on the other side of the planet.

I posted a story about this deck-building game earlier today, but here's a direct link to the Kickstarter. I'm hoping some of my gamer friends will support the project and get a copy, so I have people to play against!

Yesterday's announcement that scientists have detected direct evidence of cosmic inflation was big, big news --the kind of discovery that comes along once in a generation. That's why I love this clip: At the center of a profound leap forward in our understanding of the universe, there's a guy who had a wild idea forty years ago, and now he can't believe what he's hearing.
