"The Courts of the Southern District of Florida remain closed for normal operating business, anticipated to open to the public no sooner than Monday, Sept. 18th. The closure is due to school closures and travel conditions, as well as power outages at various courthouses impacting services including the Court’s computer network."

Over the years, I've represented hundreds of clients who have been charged with shoplifting or petit theft. Most of them have never been in trouble before. Believe it or not, I've represented doctors, bankers, attorneys—just about everyone you can think of. So why did they do it?

Although there are definitely cases where people are falsely arrested, most of my clients freely admit their guilt and come to me like a dog with its tail between its legs. They are racked with shame and actually apologize for coming to see me (?!). I try to get them to stop beating themselves up, but it’s not easy. They seem to have a really difficult time reconciling their criminal behavior with their self-image. The worst part is that no matter how hard they rack their brain, they never seem to come up with an explanation for their behavior.

This is where I come in.

Let's just say that as a criminal defense lawyer, I get a pretty unique perspective on people. After a while, you start to see patterns. And one of those patterns is the self-flagellating shoplifting client.

So here is what I have learned and what I tell my clients: "No matter how hard you try, you will probably never be able to explain what possessed you to shoplift."

The fact is, people aren't perfect. Sometimes we can't explain why we do the things we do. And thank God for that! How boring would life be if there were no hiccups, everything made sense and 2 + 2 always equal 4?

We're all human. And we all make mistakes. You didn't commit a war crime. So please stop torturing yourself (Just don't do it again because I'll have to charge you more next time...) ;)
