Another candle burning too bright, snubbed out too soon.

Sympathies to Aaron's family and friends. He made the world a better place.
I was really heart-broken by this news.  I had a tremendous amount of respect for Aaron.  I hadn't seen him in a while - but we kept in touch around his various projects and I invited him to reach out when he thought I might be able to help with something.

The last email I received from him had the subject line, Hangouts on Air access for #Occupy?.  I let him know that it was still a bit early for what he envisioned (Hangouts on Air was still in a limited, early preview) but this was exactly the kind of citizen journalism that we ultimately imagined powering.

Here's how that email closed:

Me:  Are you in town? https://www.rightscon.org/speakers/  You should always reach out when you are... I'd love to host you at Google / hang out.  Might be too late now though...

Aaron: Aww, thanks. I'm here through Friday if it's not too late.

It was too late.  And now it is too late.  Thank you Aaron, for all you contributed to the world, and inspiring so many...

I was really surprised late last night when I when to pre-order +Evan Currie's newest book. The Hayden's World series has been an amazing read. One of the better SF series I've read recently. But I was shocked at the increase in price. +Tim O'Reilly pointed me at a really great piece by Charles Stross http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2012/04/understanding-amazons-strategy.html that got me thinking about my own ebook purchasing behaviours that are contributing to or are a side effect of Amazon's ebook strategy.

I'm rethinking my purchasing behaviours. I will only purchase books with out DRM and I will aim to support authors more directly.

Wondering what the best tools are to do that? Smashwords? Goodreads? Others...

Charles Stross has made me see the errors of my ways with Kindle and DRM. This analysis of the Amazon ebook strategy is a #mustread  for everyone. I
Awesome analysis of the Amazon ebook strategy by Charlie Stross (@cstross). Anyone who wants to understand how Amazon is changing the game for publishers should read this post.

I agree with Charlie on every point. He is particularly compelling on the subject of how publishers played right into Amazon's hands by insisting on DRM, and how their only hope is to drop it ASAP. I've been saying this, to deaf ears in New York, for years. Publishers need to focus on interoperable ebook standards above all else. Good for them, good for readers, and good for the industry as a whole.
