New version of hangouts just released.  Yay!

Hangouts: now smarter, faster, and a lot more fun

If you’re like me, you want to stay connected with friends and family without technology getting in the way. Hangouts lets you focus on the people you love talking to, so your conversations feel as in-the-moment and natural as they do in real life.

Today we’re updating the Hangouts app for Android to make it easier to express yourself, and have more fun along the way:
    - Like the saying goes, a sticker is worth a thousand words. From penguins to pirates, koalas to cats, 16 new sticker packs (and more to come!) have tons of ways to say what’s on your mind.
    - Give your video calls some extra flair with video filters including sepia, vignette, black & white, and more. Just swipe during a video call to try these new styles.

We’re also making it easier to start conversations with friends and family:
    - Confirm your phone number so your friends who already have your digits can more easily find and message you in Hangouts.
    - Know when your friends are ready to chat right now with “last seen” timestamps, so you never have to type, “You there?”

Hangouts is also introducing the start of something new -- smart suggestions right in your conversations:
    - When you’re trying to meet up with friends in real life and someone asks, “Where are you?”, Hangouts can now understand what you need and offer to help.  You’ll see a one-tap option to share your location right in the conversation, without you needing to hunt around in a map, drop a pin and send your position.

Try all the new features by updating the Hangouts app on your Android device  (http://goo.gl/v7FTL - rolling out to the Play Store over the next few hours). Note that “last seen” timestamps will roll out in waves over the next few weeks, so you may not see this feature for all your contacts right away. Today’s updates will also be available on the Hangouts iOS app soon.

P.S. We’ve added a few other surprises to this Hangouts update, but we’ll let you find them on your own. Woot!

Bookmark your Hangouts video calls

Whether it’s the weekly chat from your dorm room with your parents or that group video call with your fantasy football league, Hangouts is a great way to keep in touch with your friends and family. With today's update, it's easier and faster to get into a Hangouts video call with your favorites.

You can already share a link to a live video call from your browser to invite more people to join. Starting today you can bookmark the URL for any video call and come back to it again and again. Save it to your desktop, bookmark it in your browser, email it, attach it to your calendar -- stash it anywhere you like! Then, when you open a saved Hangouts link, you’ll be immediately connected to anyone else that opened that same link. Getting the gang back together again has never been easier.

Android and hangouts.  Now with google voice!

google voice calling, sms and voicemail—now available in hangouts

earlier today we announced free voice calls from hangouts, making it easy and affordable to keep in touch with loved ones (link to OGB). but that’s not all :) our update also includes some improvements for our passionate (and patient) google voice users:

1. calling. when you call someone from hangouts, it’ll now come from your google voice number. and when someone calls you, you can answer from hangouts too.

2. sms. you can now send and receive your google voice sms messages from the hangouts app.

3. voicemail. google voice voicemails can now appear in hangouts as part of your ongoing conversations. either read the transcriptions, or play them inline!

these features will be activated a few days after we complete today’s rollout. so grab the new version of hangouts when it’s available (v2.3, http://goo.gl/v7FTL), and install the accompanying dialer to turn on voice calls (http://goo.gl/tRaJpm). ios only supports google voice calling for now, but sms and voicemail support are coming soon.

hangouts remains the future of google voice (http://goo.gl/WVVFN0), so we’re going to keep bringing the most-loved google voice features into the core hangouts experience. (don’t worry: your google voice number won't change.) in the meantime make a free call on us, and enjoy today’s updates!

Nifty post from +Jordanna Chord. We gave these or recently to some people on the team. They do look pretty nifty!

Amidst the flurry of feature development it takes great engineers to take the time to pause and clean up code. This work is challenging because our users never see it directly which makes it hard to prioritize. But it alone is what makes it possible to move fast and iterate on the things users care about.

Hangouts recognizes those stellar engineers with this cute little green trophy. Want one too? We are hiring! ;0)

Hangouts in Google voice!

When I'm travelling I like to call my family from the Google Voice website on my laptop, but without a phone handy, it's a little hard to use. To make things easier, we've just added Hangouts as an option when making calls from the web. It works even if you aren't using Hangouts in Gmail, and doesn't require a Google+ account. Try it the next time you place a call from the Google Voice website -- I think it's a much easier way to keep in touch with people.

Updates on the hangouts chrome app.

Thanks a lot for feedback on the new Hangouts Chrome app. there were bunch of questions so wanted to do a quick summary

* Make sure you are running Chrome 38. A lot of feedback was around high DPI screens - that issue is fixed on M38

*Some users have mentioned no sounds for notifications. We had a bug and it has been fixed - you should see this soon.

* Multi-account support - Hangouts supports Chrome profiles. Add a new user to Chrome and then install the app again on that profile. you can then run 2 instances of the app

*Linux - it works ok on Linux but you will not get transparency and animations. Plus it may not work on all the Window managers.

*Mac - While it works on Mac, it is not the desired UX due to lack of transparency and shaping APIs. Please keep using the Hangouts extension on Mac for time being. We will be improving the UX here soon

* Explore the options menu (see screenshot below) - it lets you customize the app behavior. If you don't like on-top behavior, you can turn it off.

* Phone calls - you can call your phone contacts. After you click the search button, click on the Dial icon. this will let you call your personal contacts

*Starting video calls take 2 steps. We are aware of this issue and will be fixing it soon

Keep the feedback coming!

New exciting things in the world of hangouts on air!

Showcase content in Hangouts On Air

Hosting a Hangout On Air is a great way to connect with your audience. While viewers are tuned in, this is the perfect time to share or promote something related to the conversation. Using the new Showcase app, hosts can now direct viewers to websites, merchandise, YouTube videos, your Google+ profile and Google Play content, all in a rich display on the right-hand side of the Hangout broadcast.

Now, anyone can host a live conversation and connect their viewers to a variety of related content. Take a look at how the cast of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes used the Showcase app to link to exclusive footage, movie tickets, and more (http://goo.gl/GngZvv). Also, check out how Common used the Showcase app to promote his new music video and to drive fans directly to the Play Store to purchase his new album in real-time (http://goo.gl/4QGi7O).

There are all kinds of ways to enrich your live conversations using Showcase. We’re excited to see what you’ll share in your next Hangout On Air. Give it a try today: http://goo.gl/oMXG1M!

steak was over cooked scallops were overcooked. I asked for a coffee at the start of the meal and it took me all meal to get it and then I had to ask for the milk and sugar twice. overall a place I am not interested in going back to. for the price it is not worth it.
