pretty cool!

What if the Mandelbrot set were an island... and you could fly over it in your hang-glider?  Wouldn't that be cool?  This is the next best thing!

This was made by +Jos Leys - and if you like mathematical art, you should definitely circle him.

I'm going to start a Spark File immediately.
Warning: this post ends with a homework assignment. Steven Johnson is one of my favorite authors. I wish I could remember who introduced me to him so I could thank them. T... | Fearless leader @indyha...

I love this "Cultural Map" from the World Values Survey mentioned in the Coursera Model Thinking Culture lecture. #modelthinking
Each country is positioned according to its people's values and not its geographical location. To a large extent the two coincide, but the map measures cultural proximity, not geographical proximi...

WORLD PREMIERE: New piano piece by W. A. Mozart
Allegro Molto in C Major: Florian Birsak

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/03/24/lost-mozart-work-found/
For centuries it has lain lost and abandoned in a notebook, but now scholars have unearthed what they believe to be a composition by an 11-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It was performed on Friday, March 24 in Mozart’s old apartment in Salzburg, Austria, on his own pianoforte.

The little song fragment is simply labelled “allegro molto” or “very quick” and, while it is one of his earliest known original works, musicologists who have studied the piece say that it is undoubtedly Mozart.

Florian Birsak, the harpsichordist who performed the piece on Friday said that it’s clearly an early work, but that one can already sense the “little details” that foreshadow the unfolding of the composer’s genius.

"Human beings ... are very much at the mercy of the particular language which has become the medium of expression for their society.  It is quite an illusion to imagine that one adjusts to reality essentially without the use of language and that language is merely an incidental means of solving specific problems of communication and reflection. The fact of the matter is that the 'real world' is to a large extent unconsciously built up on the language habits of the group".   The Status of Linguistics as a Science, 1929, Edward Sapir, as quoted in the introduction to Bruce Eckel's Thinking In Java

"Gold can be created only by stars and by intelligent beings. If you find a nugget of gold anywhere in the universe you can be sure that there was either a supernova or an intelligent being with an explanation. And if you find an explanation anywhere in the universe you know that there must have been an intelligent being." --David Deutsch in Beginning of Infinity

We're building a new library system for my kids' school and needed an audio alert when someone messes up, so we grabbed the nearest first grader ( Levi) and made this. Definitely the best error message I've ever made.

Sounds good to me!

Apparently we used to sleep in two four-hour chunks per day (rather than one 8-hour chunk), according to these scientists.
Sleeping in one eight-hour chunk is a very recent phenomenon, and lying awake at night could be good for you, according to scientists and historians.
