My new +Caring.com column explores new LGBT research from AARP, what SAGEusa is doing to train and educate senior care providers, and the ways in which some dedicated people and organizations are creating positive change.

I've visited about 30 assisted living homes and senior communities in recent years. Some for article research; others for personal reasons. I asked myself the same question when I walked through the doors of each community: Would I feel comfortable here if I was older and ready for a senior community? With a couple of exceptions, nope.

When I talked to staff at these places, I was surprised to hear comments such as, “I haven’t seen any gay people here,” “No one has ever complained” and “We treat everyone the same.” When it comes to diversity, inclusion and understanding specific LGBT needs, some of them don't know what they don't know. Others don't want to know.

And if folks in these relatively progressive communities weren’t attuned to the needs of older LGBT adults, I wondered what the reactions would be in other, less accepting parts of the country. My visits made it clear that the LGBT community has a lot of awareness raising work and training left to do across the senior living industry.

My new essay in Scoundrel Time literary journal is about my brother's recent lung transplant, his experience with the ACA, what it was like for us and why healthcare coverage is never just for an individual.

Closets are for clothes. Human beings don’t belong in them. So why, in 2017, do older LGBT still face so much discrimination and so few options? In my new Caring.com article, I explore services and housing options for this at-risk community.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Loving v. Virginia, the iconic Supreme Court case that struck down the ban on interracial marriage. Read about my personal connection to it in my new @Salon essay.

It's striking how the same arguments against interracial marriage were used against marriage equality 48 years later, also in June in the Supreme Court. Equality triumphed in both cases. And how serendipitously named was this couple, so that for the rest of time, we’ll say that in the case of Loving v. Virginia, hating lost and loving won?

My new essay - "Calm-Downers, Resisters, and Bags by the Door." Sparked by a post-election day conversation about 🇺🇸 politics and protests. How do you stay engaged and zen at the same time?

It's in the premier issue of Scoundrel Time, a literary journal where artists & writers resist threats to freedom through creative works.

The name #ScoundrelTime refers to Lillian Hellman's memoir about going up against the House Un-American Activities Committee at the height of the McCarthy era.
