Edit: Finally got Unity 3D working! It looks like it was a key-binding conflict with the gnome-compatibility compiz plugin. When I enabled the unity plugin in CCSM (which wasn't installed for some reason) I got prompted about a bunch of key binding conflicts and was prompted to resolve them. I guess by default it'd hit the conflict, disable the conflicting plugin which the Unity plugin required, which left me with the Desktop & the top menu bar stuck on the Nautilus context menu.

Edit 2: Also got my workspaces configured... the option to configure this wasn't under the "Desktop Wall" plugin I was using for multiple desktops, but rather under a more generic config settings menu.

Overall, the thing feels very OSX-inspired, complete with application-context-sensitive menu bar. I'm OK with this as most of the time it's unused anyways and moving menu options up here saves a fair amount of screen real-estate. Under TwinView it appears to clone the task bar (including all widgets) across both desktops, I'd like to be able to just have various widgets on one menu.

The Unity sidebar is very mac-inspired as well, with an integrated task/app manager. Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to allow much customization. Adding launch-groups (available in taskbars such as gnome-cairo) and menu groups to launchers also doesn't appear to be intuitive. Clicking on a running app or its launcher just brings it up to the front (or all instances if there are multiple instances running), a right click is needed to launch a new instance of the application and doesn't appear to offer any customization options here, so I can't pass any options to, for example, gnome-terminal to auto-ssh to a remote host in the launcher or launch profiles, very annoying if you work in a large hosting facility and remote out to lots of machines on a constant basis. I did find something about setting up quicklaunch menus (which requires config/.desktop file hackery) which I may pursue.

Additionally, some of the apps don't appear to play nicely with sidebar launchers. x3270 in particular, just doesn't work with the out-of-the-box pin-to-launcher functionality, but it's pretty old software so that's not too surprising. I figure if I get into launcher tweaking I should be able to hand-write or tweak launchers for the handful of apps that don't work quite right.

Found some really useful quicklist/launcher config stuff here, I'll have to look into that tomorrow!

http://askubuntu.com/questions/35488/list-of-custom-launchers-quicklists-for-unity

I also haven't found any advanced configuration for the screensaver, default controls from fresh install only appear to allow configuration of lock timer and screen shutoff timer, I'm hoping this is just a missing extra screensaver package or something.

On the plus side, the rendering issues I had with my displays in 11.04 appear to be gone. It's fairly fast, the UI is clean and fairly intuitive, and the default themes are nice. I'm just not sure if it's worth the trade-off for me in terms of options for customization that have been lost.

I also like the refresh of the gdm login screen, it's a nice look that's pretty unique.

Also, at least Outlook 2007 running under Crossover doesn't appear to like to run in less-than-fullscreen, appears to magically resize itself back if running windowed. Not a huge deal, but again, why?

Since G+ went open I've been getting bombarded with what appear to be completely random followers. Don't appear to be spambots or anything afaict. Anyone else see this also? Seems a bit hinky...
