This was a few days ago in Gatwick. You think you're good at what you do, and then this chap here.

+seyi oni That's the paradox. You must admit that but as soon as you do things will go downhill.

This is a really good and accurate overview of a typical Google data center. I'd worked in not-small data centers and colos in my previous lives, but I'm still delighted and awestruck with both our facilities' size and efficiency, which is coreq if you want to maintain operations at that size.

Free, captive portal free WiFi. USB and power at every seat in the terminal. Efficient security and self service everything. San Jose airport might be my new favourite place on earth. Sorry, friends and loved ones. I'm home.

You've not spent much time in Asian airports, I'm picking.

I have a general-purpose out-of-office message for when I'm traveling for work. I think I may have actually written this while trapped in the Inexorable Maze of Dunno at one point.

The last time I went through the US it took about 10 seconds. Bag on roller, walk through magnetoscope, pick up bag (, wait hours for my flight).

The last time I went through the UK I had fast track and there was no queue. It still took about 5 minutes. They seemed to think that was a great success. It didn't occur to them that if there had been 10 people waiting and they each took 5 minutes it would be a disaster.

Just to repeat -- I was Heathrow's biggest defender until less than a year ago. Everyone else was always saying how terrible it was and I kept saying if you know where to go it's great because it's consistent and there are nice corners. But last year something got much much worse quite suddenly.

This chap here.
Offence and Free Speech. I was asked to speak on a panel about offence and free speech post Charlie Hebdo. I always quite like the idea of speaking at some serious discussion, but in practice I just make everybody uncomfortable and they all smile at me uneasily in the way a posh cafe owner does ...

The US immigration guy didn't ask me any questions and referred to himself as 'T-dawg'. I assume this means that terrorism is over.
