And yes - federated (via open standards compliant APIs) wins over monolithic every time.
I have been meaning for some time to get around to blogging about the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative's (ELI's) paper on a Next-Generation Digital Learning Environment (NGDLE) and Tony Bates' thoughtful

Yeah, "Clyde!" - one of my all time favourite moments in music.

I've been a FOSS advocate for two decades... but Charlie's actually in amongst it nurturing and inspiring the next generation of the FOSS community. This is what we need everywhere. I live in New Zealand, and we're facing exactly the same challenges - the awkward fit between schools and IT - and I think Charlie's approach is the solution: give the power to the learners to teach and to build confidence, competence, and community while they, probably unwittingly, lead a transformation in education and society.

The last one (3/3) from my talk.
Dave Lane points out the imminent dangers that openwashing presents. Full presentation can be found online. @lightweight #OSOS2015

Charlie, you're doing (already) what I've been advocating for a few years here in New Zealand. Congratulations, and many thanks for doing something that was somewhat hypothetical for me!

Wow, some impressive thinking here. I like your nuanced approach regarding standards at the "right level of abstraction" - therein lies the real art. But also, fundamentally, that, for all their up-front pain, open standards are required for long term payoff and a tractable, vibrant ecosystem. You reference TCP/IP - when I see the idea that, simply by adhering to some well described rules (which anyone can implement and follow) someone can participate without any further permission required. For a really vibrant learning ecosystem (as with open source software projects) permissionless innovation is what we want to enable and encourage.

Have a look at the dozens of options on dx.com or banggood.com - same or better prices as your EBay special, shipping included. Especially good for folks like me who aren't in the US - shipping to NZ is included in their prices.

Holy crap, this is perhaps the most complete, factually accurate, and funny anti-patent rant I've seen. Amazing.

Another one related to my OS//OS talk.
Can we live up to the instructions we give our children? We'll need to if want the benefits of an open society, says Dave Lane. @Lightweight #OSOS2015

spreading joy and confusion
Introduction
I'm an American who's found a better life in NZ and have become a kiwi (to the extent that's possible for a yank). I have been active in many circles over the years including: free and open source software, Christchurch business, swing dancing scene, local music scene (well, a small part of it), ultimate (frisbee), cycling advocacy, wine/beer/coffee appreciation, social activism, back country tramping, fly fishing crew, aikido, academia, woodworking cadre, self-sufficiency enthusiasts, and backyard politicians.

Most of my extra curricular activities have been (relatively contentedly) curtailed of late due to the demands of a young family.
Bragging rights
I can make that waterdrop sound on my cheek like Cameron in Ferris Buehler's Day Off. Been using Linux (exclusively) since 1994. Danced for money. Done beat boxing on stage. Crazy-flexible (in the physical sense). Really enjoy being a husband (civil union) and papa. Won fairly prestigious awards in at least 3 totally unrelated fields of endeavour. Serious about living up to my principles. Started my own company so I'd be subject to no one's incompetence other than my own. I spread joy and confusion, but not necessarily in equal measure. I have a lot of energy to contribute to the right causes.

Other names
I'm Dave to most, Davey to close friends and family. Some people call me Digger (not an Aussie reference, long story). Others "Danger" for obvious reasons. A few call me "Prime" (another long story). Still others know me as Lightweight (originally an obscure reference to my band, 3kg). Only my mum calls me David.
