Finally got around to watching Torchwood: Miracle Day. You thought you'd never hear me say this: this show has too much gay.

Then by the interpretation you have in mind, not everyone can be significant or important to you, particularly if that attitude involves the way that you treat everyone, since it is impossible for you to be interacting in the past, present or future with "everyone", not even serially.

In my treatise: "Social Meta-Needs: A New Basis for Optimal Interaction" at: http://selfsip.org/fundamentals/socialmetaneeds.html I take a somewhat different approach. A rational (long-range widest-viewed) thinking person will act to maximize his/her own lifetime happiness, but that necessarily (and I show why it is necessary) also means that all such actions will, at the same time as much as is possible for other rational people, also operate to maximize the lifetime happiness of each one of them as s/he evaluates that happiness.

Noticeably (and unsurprisingly) missing from the list: Orson Scott Card
A dispute between a Utah publisher and a gay author who made a nod to his boyfriend in his biography has drawn mixed reactions from the publishing community. As of Friday afternoon, 34 Mormon authors had signed a letter asking publishers to base decisions on “content, quality, and commercial viability, not on any other factor.” Meanwhile, an Arizona-based LDS author said Cedar Fort just last week published a book of ...

(Oh, you know me better than that.) It is so very tempting to wish this learning process on all homophobic Christian parents of gay children. But I can't figure out a way that could come true without the same happening to the innocent children. So instead I'm wishing for those parents to just pull their heads out of their bibles, and their asses, and just love their children without having to lose them.

(A friend of mine killed himself on June 11th; he was 23 and I've known him since he was 18. His family loved him and accepted him; he was not another Ryan. I may never know why he killed himself. But I am overflowing with grief, and feeling lost and angry, and people like Linda before her painful journey pop up in the headlines in front of me every day, and they make very apt targets for my anger.)
We told our son that he had to choose between Jesus and his sexuality. Choosing God, practically, meant living a lifetime condemned to being alone. So, just before his 18th birthday, Ryan, depressed, suicidal and disillusioned, made a new choice.

(I hope you can't blame me for being a little obsessed and elated with the news today...)

Professional bigot Brian Brown is messing his diaper today... Tonight he'll seek solace in the arms of his bear buddy Matt Barber, deep in that special closet inhabited by only the hatin'est of haters..
NOM will do everything in our power to preserve marriage across the country, because the institution of marriage as God created is the most important social institution we can offer men, women and children.

I had the honor of meeting Doug Engelbart at a party in his home in the 1990's (and have had the honor of meeting Ted Nelson several times). Both are among my personal heroes. Everybody should watch this clip.

My nephew Brad is one of the principals behind this KickStarter. I gave him some tips on how to appeal more to "real" programmers.  ("Include lots of curly braces... except in the Python set!") Check it out; I know some of you spawned child processes recently...

Most of Greg Egan's works are available now for $2.99 each on Kindle. (Permutation City, alas, is not among them, but Quarantine is.)

Watch out; there's a competing version of Schild's Ladder from HarperCollins at $8.89. (The one I bought last year, sadly.) Don't ask me how this is possible; ask Egan's solicitors.

At least he admits it (emphasis mine):

“Talking about myself,” he added, “marriage to my wife made me a better man. I want to impose that value on others, because that’s what rightwingers do.”
Fox News talk show co-host Greg Gutfeld told a panel on Wednesday's episode of “The Five” that he believes the Supreme Court's rulings on same sex marriage are actually “a huge conservative victory” because it will make LGBT people less promiscuous, then suggested that it's time “gay activists” ...
