What better way to appreciate the planet on which we live than to look out at the stars and wonder... what if?

I recently learned some fancy new post-processing techniques and retooled this image I shot last year.  It was taken at approximately 1:30 AM on the northwest side of Mt. Rainier.

Dreamcatcher || False Kiva, Canyonlands, UT

Now here's an interesting hike for anyone visiting Canyonlands near Moab, Utah.  This is one of my most dreaded but yet exhilarating hikes to go it alone.  People that know me well understand I have issues with my left hip and lower back.  So, while this hike may be "difficult" for some it's more like seriously strenuous for me.  But, in the end the pain is worth it.
On this particular day, I had the entire view all to myself.  I took off my boots and just relaxed on this huge boulder while taking in the scenery.  What really took me by surprise was the green color coming from the valley.  It had been raining and the canyon looked like it was coming to life.

About the shot...

I manually blended a handful of bracketed exposures and then added a custom vignette to highlight the Kiva.  Sharpening was done in LAB mode for a change of pace.

Garden of Stone || Bryce Canyon, UT

Taken last month as I walked the Navajo Loop Trail in Bryce Canyon, Utah. What a stunning view.  This is a small sample of a larger image that I will share soon.  I swear, there is no better lens to shoot Bryce Canyon than the Nikkor 70-200/2.8 for capturing the fine details.

A Portal Through Time | Delicate Arch, Arches NP, Utah

I wasn't sure if I wanted to share this image or not since it has been photographed more times than there are stars in the Milky Way.  But, each and every shot of this famous arch is just a bit different from the rest.  The hike is considered "strenuous" according to the park map that is handed to you as you enter.  It's even worse if you're packing 25 pounds of camera gear and you forgot your trekking poles.  Wait, no, I can think of what makes it worse.  Getting to the top and finding four year old children bounding around jumping, running, and playing like they have all the energy in the world and all the while I am about to break out a tank of oxygen just to survive.

What I particularly liked about this shot is the setting sun cascading the reddish-orange hues over the hills in the middle ground.  The La Sal Mountains can be seen in the distance.  The sunset on this evening was stunning but all the while I had my camera trained on the arch.

Eternal Flame - Lower Antelope Canyon, Page, AZ

Folks, this is as close to SOOC as you're ever going to get from me.  I almost posted this SOOC but, since I shoot RAW, I thought I needed to sharpen it up, back off the highlights a bit and increase the contrast just a smidge.  I love how the rock formation appears to be a candle flame.  And, just think, all those lines and striations in the rock are created by rushing water and sand during a flood.  Our guide told us there is only one bad F word in the Navajo language and that is "Flood".  If my memory serves me correctly, the word is waleche. (wah-lay-chay)  She said, if you hear that word, run.  Duly noted.

The Tower of Babel II - Arches National Park, UT

This image was taken following some crazy rain in Arches NP.  Not something you see too often.  I thought the clouds were so impressive and so I composed this shot with plenty-o-clouds to go around.  You have to step a bit off the trail to get this shot.  Always be mindful of where you step in Arches NP.  The cryptobiotic (living) soil is extremely fragile and can literally take up to 250 years to regenerate.  I was careful to walk in a wash at the side of the road where there was clearly no crypto soil.

Indian Chief || Lower Antelope Canyon in Page, AZ

Here's an interesting formation.  They call this one the "Indian Chief".  His head is facing to the right with the formal Indian headdress flowing to the left.  Can you see it?  His eye and nose are just below the lightest part of the image.  My guide pointed this feature out to our small group.  I actually returned from my trip and, for the life of me, could not find this photo.  That is, until yesterday when going through my collection.  It just popped out at me as I was staring at the center of the image.  Whew... but not like a drive back to Page is out of the question!

Switchbacks || Bryce Canyon, UT

This image was taken on my last morning in Bryce Canyon.  I was up at 2:30 AM to shoot the Milky Way from Sunset Point.  As the sun rose over the canyon, I decided to see what the Navajo Loop trail was all about.  This is what I saw that morning as the switchbacks descended into the canyon.

You get out what you put in

Hall of the Giants | Bryce Canyon, Navajo Loop Trail

This was an unexpected surprise.  I was just finishing up my first hike on the Navajo Loop Trail when I came upon these monster trees.  They were huge and I don't think the photo does them justice.  I'd say maybe 70-85 ft tall but I'm not so good at judging height.  It took my widest lens to get it all in.  (Nikkor 14-24 2.8)  I liked how the golden sunrise bounced around and down into the canyon.

Gilded - Horseshoe Bend, AZ

I stayed only one night in Page, AZ.  I wish I could have stayed longer.  But, you get what you get and only one sunset was on the menu.  I love this spot... been here several times and each time there is something new to see.  For this shot, I bracketed 7 exposures and blended them in Lightroom using the Merge to 32 bit plugin.  Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CC 2015.  I loved how the sun splashes off the red rock in the foreground and yet keeps the rest of the landscape in mostly shadow.  It makes for great contrast.

+Michael Harding thank you sir!  I haven't "tonemapped" in a very long time.  But, even with a 32 bit file I still have to bring it back into the range of human vision.  It can be a tricky process, as I'm sure you're aware.
