I’m in a book! 📚

“Each fat raindrop that splashed off my guitar case seemed to fall in slow motion. The whole night already felt doomed. And it was, almost.” ☔️🎸

Joe Romm is a best-selling author and one of Rolling Stone’s “100 people who are changing America”, he’s got a new and I’m super-proud to be featured in it! It’s a great read, full of wisdom and secrets about how to harness your uniqueness and passions to create your own success! It’s called "How to Go Viral and Reach Millions"! 🎉

It’s available now everywhere! I had a blast being interviewed and writing a cinematic new look at one of the lowest-turned-highest moments in my life.

I just got back from California where I did a whole new TED Talk! Woo! It was an amazing experience and I can't wait to share the video with you! If anyone wants to check it out before the official video drops you can go fast-forward through the recorded livestream at www.tedxberkeley.org (my talk starts at 3:14:00).

Wish I could hug y'all instead of these guitars ;)

🚨 NEW TED TALK ALERT! 🚨
Hey loves!! I’m telling our story again, but in a whole new way!!

Tomorrow, Sat Feb 17th, I’m joining the prestigious line-up at TEDxBerkeley! I just flew in to California and I can’t wait to share our amazing history that started right here on G+ and talk about everything I’ve been up to since! (Founding a studio! Making tons of new music! Playing! Filmmaking! Being an artistpreneur!)

But most importantly this new performance is about my gratitude and love for you all and the gift you gave me... You taught me how to make what I love, what I do. And now I wanna help others do it too!

💻👀 You can WATCH LIVE on tedxberkeley.org

⏰🎸 I go on around 11:45am PT / 2:45pm ET!

XO!
Your girl, D

Ps. Tell me how you are! What have you all been up to?! 😘

There is so much emotion in the air. We’re all breathing it deeply into our lungs. Holding it inside ourselves. Exhaling. It’s intense. The community that changed my life was a global community. First they were virtual. Beautiful faces popping up on my laptop screen as I sang. Then they were friends in foreign lands that I set foot on. They hugged me in London. Guided me through the streets of Tel Aviv. Drove me through the rolling fields of Scotland. Shared sunsets in the Caribbean and sparkling nights in Paris. They became immigrants too. Pulled to the pursuit of happiness that the America I love promises. It’s been said a million times by a million voices now, but I add my own to the chorus. All human beings are worthy of love, acceptance, compassion, empathy and a home. Wherever they want that home to be. Wherever their life leads them. Wherever their feet land. Wherever their loves are.

This county was founded by refugees who were fleeing religious persecution and the oppression of a government that did not want them to be free. Religion is such a dangerously misused idea I think. It is sadly more often used as a device to divide us rather than reveal to us what makes us the same. Just another way to make another, an OTHER. The word religion just means, “What you practice”. My mama always told me to say my religion is music, because that’s what we practice. My great-great-great uncle was a concert meister in the Czar of Russia's court when the Bolshevik Revolution broke. He and his fellow musicians disguised their instruments in rags and hid themselves in canvas sacks in the back of a truck filled with broken glass. They didn’t make it out. When you practice hating others because you cannot see them as yourself, you’re nothing close to holy in my world.

But we, the people I know. The people I love. The people I see in my social media feeds. The people I see in the streets and on livestreams of protests and marches and gatherings. We are practicing a radical revolutionary level of empathy now. We are practicing acting on what our hearts know is true. We see through the smoke of the gaslighting. I see the truth I believe in, in all of you. I, like everyone I know, have been cycling through an overwhelming roulette of emotions but I keep landing back on a genuine and overpowering sense of hope. There is so much light shining through this darkness. You all inspire me, so so much. To everyone feeling like they don’t know how they can maintain this level of intensity, of anger, of outrage, of resistance, of despair… Wondering if it’s ok to turn off the news for a minute, or laugh, or meditate or breathe when so many others don’t even have that option… I think it is important, and ok, to take little private actions to cultivate an inner peace. That is also resistance, because they don’t get to take the sacred space between our ears and deep within our chests. When I started singing I always sang in school choirs. The way a choir of voices can hold a note forever is staggered-breathing. When you’re singing, I’m breathing. When you’re breathing, I’m singing. I think that’s how we do this all day, every day until everyone gets the love and respect and rights they deserve. I promise to sing, louder than ever. You breathe when you need to and we’ll keep this song of hope going.
