Lawvel's Story: How many weight loss stories start with “I’ve tried every diet available …”. Well, I am one of those people. I have tried everything, lost weight, put it back on quicker than it took me to lose it!!!
On 8 November 2014, with a starting weight of 106 kgs, I had the sleeve gastrectomy. I had lost over 30 kgs within 5 to 6 months and have maintained my weight of around 73 kgs since my surgery...I haven’t been this happy with myself in many, many years. What is Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding?

A specially made band is inserted around the top of the stomach. Gastric Banding is done by keyhole technique which makes for a quick recovery. No organs are cut, removed or rearranged during the surgery so the procedure is reversible. The small section of stomach above the band (pouch) is the part of the stomach that generates the sensation of feeling full (satiety). Now, it can only hold a small amount of food. When food is eaten the pouch is quickly filled and a sensation of fullness is felt and hunger is reduced. The food passes through the band into the rest of the stomach and is digested in the normal way.

What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, also called Tube Gastrectomy, reduces the size of your stomach, and thereby limits the amount of food you eat. It is performed with keyhole surgery, during which a thin vertical sleeve of stomach is created. This new gastric sleeve is only able to hold about one-tenth of what the stomach was previously able to hold.  In this way it restricts the amount of food you can eat and you feel full even with a small meal. Feelings of hunger are also reduced.

Weight loss is very good. Generally this is more than 60% of excess weight.

Obesity is a complex problem with many contributing factors. These can be physical, behavioural, psychological and emotional.

Treatment of obesity needs to focus on all these aspects, not just one. Whilst surgery very much helps with the physical aspects of weight control, specialists of various disciplines are needed to aid and support the patient in other areas – general medical care, nutrition and emotional support.

Significant weight loss is, for many patients, a life-changing event and can be quite a journey. Having expertise available to provide advice, treatment and support from different angles, allows more effective holistic care and better results.
