It actually doesn't solely play audio as you kept repeating, and you knew that because you said seconds earlier it "kind of" has the play store. It doesn't "kind of" have the play store, it absolutely does. The design is quite subjective but I personally like it and I know others that do, but OK sure its unusual. Saying you could buy something else with $1200 dollars isn't really a reason not to get this device. You can obviously buy other things with your money, that's a given, but you listed a gaming PC, a monitor, etc. Those devices are completely useless for what the zx2 plans to provide, high quality portable audio. Last time I checked, I could not carry my gaming PC in my pocket to listen to high fidelity sound. This brings me to my final point. This is not being marketed towards iPod enthusiasts, this is being marketed towards audiophiles who need a solution to high quality portable sound. If you knew anything about audio, you'd know that good headphones, earbuds, preamps, and speakers are well in the $1000 range and beyond so this fits right in for this niche market. Whether or not it does its job is another question.
