in need of some file-naming advice, archives hive-mind. what's your preference: descriptive or non-descriptive? what's been your experience good or bad with either?
ha. no problem, it happens. thanks for the help. this is definitely internal for digitization projects. i've heard good arguments, including yours, for both descriptive and non-descriptive naming. the thinking on non-descriptive is that so long as the numbers in the file name are unique and associated with the accession of the physical material from which it is derived, then description isn't necessary. the original item record should contain the necessary metadata and as long as the association between the physical collection and the digital derivative persists the name shouldn't matter, just that it's unique. this makes even more sense once considering that collections tend to be digitized piecemeal. i'm obviously going back and forth on how i feel about it. conundrum.

Hi everyone. I just recently began work as the Digital Archivist at the College of William & Mary in Virginia. I have a particular interest in archives content management systems and UX web design. Thanks for setting up this great platform to share ideas and stay engaged with one another. I look forward to seeing this community grow.
