Spot the difference: Authorship vs Author Rank for SEO

Now that Google has removed authorship from search results what are the impacts on SEO? This article by +Danny Sullivan on +Search Engine Land explains the difference between authorship and author rank.

http://searchengineland.com/google-authorship-dead-author-rank-202254

Here is a quick summary:

Authorship was the inclusion of author photos, names and Google+ details in Google search results
Author Rank is the potential boosting of ranking for stories by trustworthy authors
• Google is likely to be looking at bylines (e.g. "Post by Benjamin Mangold") moving forward to determine author rank
• You might want to continue to use authorship markup (e.g. rel="Author") to tell Google about the authors of your blog posts

Show people you are qualified by taking the +Google Analytics exam which is now free within +Google Partners.

What is the exam?

The exam is 90 questions about setting up, customizing, using and analyzing data in Google Analytics. You need to get 80% of the questions correct to pass the exam and once you do you become a Google Analytics qualified individual.

Why is it important to be qualified?

Taking the exam shows people that you have a good level of understanding on using Google Analytics. It can help you stand out compared to people who haven't taken the exam. (That being said actually using Google Analytics for yourself is also really important. The exam just helps support that you have knowledge of the tool.)

What do I need to study?

You should read through and watch the videos that Google makes available, currently they are:

• Digital Analytics Fundamentals: https://analyticsacademy.withgoogle.com/course01?hl=en-US
• Google Analytics Platform Principles: https://analyticsacademy.withgoogle.com/course02?hl=en-US
• Ecommerce Analytics: https://analyticsacademy.withgoogle.com/course03?hl=en-US
• Google's study guide: https://support.google.com/analytics/topic/6083717

Where do I take the exam?

You will need to signup as a Google Partner at https://www.google.com/partners/ and take the exam under the 'Certifications' menu item.

Call out what matters most to your customers

Whether it’s free shipping on all laptops or a price match guarantee on smartphones, the more information people have, the better purchase decisions they can make online. That’s why we’re introducing callout extensions: additional text that shows with your Google search ads, highlighting specific information about your products and services. Callouts will start rolling out today, with full availability to all advertisers in the next few weeks.

Callouts [http://goo.gl/LlX636] show valuable information to potential customers before they click your ad; while also being a factor in Ad Rank [http://goo.gl/jJDnvC]. Use them to draw attention to important product details and benefits. Or highlight what makes your business different from your competitors. Callouts can also be used effectively in combination with other ad formats [http://goo.gl/ZPswMa]. For example, if you’re already using a sitelink [http://goo.gl/8P1m4v] for “Back to School”, create a callout for “20% off entire site” to encourage people to click through and make a purchase. Or if you’re using call extensions [http://goo.gl/AcZVF], highlight “24/7 customer support” so your customers know they can call your business for help. However you plan to use callouts, make sure to keep them focused and relevant.

Since callouts can be added at the account, campaign, or ad group level, you can provide more general information about your products and services at the account or campaign level, and more detailed information at the ad group level. For example, add callouts for “Special discounts” or “Free shipping” to campaigns containing more general keywords like cheap flights or shoes respectively. Or add callouts for product details at the ad group-level to support more specific keywords like men’s running shoes or 12 cup coffee makers.

To learn more about creating and managing callouts, see our AdWords Help Center article: http://goo.gl/LlX636
