May I interrupt my recipe introduction for this glorious Vegan “Clam” Chowder today and just have a heart-to-heart with you, friend? Before I do, don’t forget that this the First Annual Fork & Beans Gluten-Free Vegan “Seafood” Bake. We already made “Scallops” from King Oyster Mushroom stems. Next on the menu: Baked King Oyster MushroomsContinue…

My wife and I visited Souper Salad today for lunch - I am trying to eat 100% plant based and my wife, who never was much of a meat eater is right behind me since being told by her doctor that her cholesterol and sugar were elevated.

She was advised to "eat lean protein, small meals, whole foods, and more plants" - LOL.

We are trying to establish strategies for visiting various non-vegan restaurants in our area.

On today's visit she and i had a salad with a vinaigrette dressing (labeled as vegan), we each had a baked potato, there was a selection of toppings available, butter (or a butter like spread - couldn't be sure), sour cream, onions, "bacon" bits (probably TVP).

She had the spread, and I almost didn't have the potato, thought I would basically be eating a dry potato, which didn't appeal to me.

But they did have some nice tomato basil soup, ingredients were listed, and didn't include any animal products - so I topped my baked potato with tomato basil soup - very delicious.

And the potato was labeled as "vegan, gluten-free", well duh :-)

Afterwards we had cubes of shortbread (not sure if vegan), and strawberry sauce (labeled as vegan).

That was our vegan adventure in Souper Salad - we also recently visited Mad Greens, Sweet Tomatoes (aka Soup Plantation), and Outback with our son (who is an omnivore).

Anyone have a trip report, or want to share your strategies for navigating as a vegan in a non vegan restaurant?

Some of these cold, icy nights call for chowda. Being vegan, I saw this as a tiny, potential obstacle. Once again though, I've discovered that I can still have the delicious things I loved as an omnivore. This vegan, smoky mushroom clam chowder is ultra creamy and super thick making it very rich and hearty.

Many restaurants will make you a side or two of vegetables if you ask. Look what veggies are served with the meat dishes and ask if they can fix you a plate of them. Also, if you like Thai food, they are very good at adapting many recipes to vegan or vegetarian. I'm new at this but I travel for business a lot.

Soup can be boring. Not this hot and sour soup though! You must try it.
