General Discussion  -

Before the end of the month, +Sean P. O. MacCath-Moran and +C.S. MacCath are launching a vegan-focused website that addresses vegan fallacies in direct and approachable ways. Each issue is accompanied by resources which back up and support the topic. The plan is start with just a few issues covered, and to gradually roll out more and more each week. The project is multi-lingual, and the languages supported are scalable and flexible (i.e. we can add more as and when needed, and the site elastically supports incomplete translation sets). All of the work on the site is being done by people who are confirmed vegans, including the artwork, verbiage, editing, coding and hosting company (i.e. Triskele Media Inc.), administration, etc.

We'll be soliciting more volunteers after the launch, but... would you like to volunteer your time be a part of this before launch? If so, we're interested in interviewing for the following skills and tasks:

Translators

We really need volunteer translators! Our goal is to translate the site's content in to as many languages as there are cultures with pre-vegans and internet access -- which is to say: "all of them".

At the same time, we're keenly interested in maintaining the quality of the content on the site. We ask that all translators be fully fluent in both English and in the language they're translating too (with a strong preference that their native tongue be the target language), and that he or she has received a higher education degree (in order to help ensure the quality of the prose on the site). The reason for the dual fluency is that the original verbiage is all being generated in English (since this demographic appears to have the greatest market share). Whenever possible, we also like to have two translators for a given language, with each of them reviewing and constructively critiquing the other's work.

For those that might not be familiar with "peer review" approaches such as this, it's important to keep in mind that this review of each other's work is a done to foster positive and proactive cooperation; i.e. it's not intended as a "checking for errors" exercise so much as it is "identifying opportunities for improvement in style and message".

Fallacy Verbiage

Are you handy with a turn of phrase and well familiar with non-vegan misconceptions on vegan issues? If so, then we have many upon many more fallacies yes to add to the site, and we could surely use your help to identify them and add content to their entries. We actually have quite a few lined up for release already, but it's a bit of a process to get each of them published.

First, we try to identify all of the various ways one might consider, interpret, or misinterpret a particular fallacy, and then we try to respond to all of these. However, it's important that each entry be as pithy as possible, so the next step is often to condense these ideas down to as short and sensible a space as we can. Then there's the editorial process, wherein content is reviewed by several volunteers to ensure the that both the language and ideas are technically sound. At some point during all of this, the set of graphics for the fallacy have to be created and added, and the web team needs to approve (or add) each of the short and long URLs for the item.

But don't be discouraged by any of this! While the road to getting a fallacy published has several steps, it's all taking place in a fairly well organized system; there's a place for you in the process regardless of your skill level with any particular aspect of the workflow.

Resource Aggregators

While the fallacies get a lot of visibility up front, the real strength and substance of the site is the resources listed with each of them. These items are carefully selected for their applicability to the topic, their effectiveness in communicating and advocating the point, and their appropriateness for all viewers. Further, care is taken to ensure that the content is either free to use and share, or that special permission in obtained to use it; the importance of being attentive to copyright issues cannot be stressed strongly enough.

The big problem with the fallacy resources is that there's always newer and better content out there that's perfect for the site, but which we don't know about yet. One of the important roles that volunteers play is in identifying, vetting, and recommending such media for inclusion on the site.

Resource Authors

On the other hand, perhaps you're a vegan who has created responses to these fallacies and would like to see your work listed and linked to on the site. If so, the you're the kind of person that really makes this sort of project function at all, and we'd very much like to work with you. Let's chat about how best to bring our ideas together.

How To Volunteer

The site is presently in pre-launch lock-down, and accounts have to be created by admins (people will be able to create accounts for themselves post-launch). If you're interested in volunteering pre-launch, and you have the time, interest, and skill to commit to this, then send an email to volunteer@yourveganfallacyis.com.

When writing us, please include
 - what skills you'd like to volunteer to the project.
 - the date you personally made the transition to veganism.
 - where applicable, your qualifications.

Keep in mind that the email account you write us on will be the one your account is registered to.

Thanks!
