A slider's workspace

I don't think we've ever shared desk spaces here in the community, or at least I couldn't find it. Anyway, this is a web librarian's workspace when he's working from home.

From left to right: There's an iPad Air 2 underneath the notebook at far left. The big screen is connected to a MacBook Air which you can see underneath the desk on the keyboard tray. (It's too low for me to use.) Just behind the keyboard you can make out a Model B+ Raspberry Pi that I've been using for digital signage work at the library. Then there's a Windows 8.1 laptop which was issued to me by the library. Finally, the other monitor is connected to my KDE web server which isn't pictured because it's on the other side of the room.

Anyone else care to share their working setup?

Cyberpunk Librarian - Episode 30 - Intragalactic Librarian!

The Cyberpunk Librarian podcast is 30! Or at least it's 30 episodes and we're celebrating with pulp sci-fi, cheap sound effects, robots, ray guns, and librarians! Join me for an original story time episode with high adventure in deep space! It's Intragalactic Librarian!

As a bonus, if you like the story, you can download an ePub or Kindle version of it to take with you!

Awesome new features in an awesome open source project!

Spectral selection, a new feature for noise removal in the upcoming Audacity release. The key idea is that rather than just select a time interval in the spectrogram view you can also select a range of frequencies, and then modify or remove just those frequencies.  http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Spectral_Selection explains in more detail.

Kudos to Pual Licameli who saw the need for and implemented this feature.  He's also made many other improvements for this release, including making noise removal effect 'cleaner' and so more effective.

These new noise removal features will be in Audacity 2.1.0 which should be released in the next few days.

Sounds good. I've been using Sound Soap for noise removal recently, but I'm looking forward to trying this.

Because sometimes you want your USB ports on the front of your iMac. And by "sometimes" I mean "all of the time."

USB Ports where you need them!
Need some more USB ports on your iMac? Or on another thin display? We loved the Clamp Hub from Satechi!

Awesome news for Audacity fans and fans of open source!

A step forward for real time effects in Audacity (effects that you can vary as you listen to them).  Audacity 2.1.0 will support real time preview of  LADSPA, VST and Audio Units effects.

The image below shows the Antress "Modern Spacer Black" VST plugin effect, running in Audacity.  It will now run with real time preview.  You can for example loop-play the audio, adjust the controls as it plays, and When you are happy with it, click 'apply'.  This particular VST plugin gives a very adjustable echo effect.  There are many others.

Kudos to Leland Lucius for progressing real time effects in Audacity.

We're working on getting Audacity 2.1.0 packaged and tested.  It should be released in the next few days.

I use Audacity not as much as I used to. I used it to record my podcast when I did it and I use it to create song excerpts for my musician web clients.

Another tool I use is Levelator. I don't know if their is a plugin for Audacity that does the same thing, but it would be nice if there was.

Changes coming to the Plus

While this doesn't spell the end of Google+, there are certainly changes coming for the social network that many of my friends think be a ghost town... because while they're my friends, they're slightly ignorant of how this place works.
As a Facebook and Twitter competitor, Google+ never really stood a chance. By some combination of odd design, confusing nomenclature—remember Circles? Sparks?—and the simple fact that no one ever really used it, Google’s grand plan to unite its many products into a single social product just didn’t pan out. So it should surprise no one…

This is good news. G+ has felt innovation stagnant for some time now.

Daniel Messer is out running. So far he has tracked 6.02 km in 40m:22s.

Back out after a few days off due to weather and lousy ear buds. Feels good to run again.

Working on episode 30 of Cyberpunk Librarian. For fun, I'm doing a story time episode with sound effects and making it up like a radio show. I've never had so damn many tracks to mix, arrange, and organize in a podcast before... but I'm really happy with how it's sounding! It'll drop tomorrow morning for those with the interest!

For those who care, this is on Netflix and available for streaming in its entirety. I think I'll catch some episodes this weekend. I'll call it therapy.

Seriously, it's about time this happened.

While we're at it, could I please get back the ability to set myself as invisible in Hangouts like I could with Google Talk? That'd be grand, thank you.

Whoa — big changes may be coming to these parts.

Introduction
Hello. My name is Dan. I live online.

No, seriously, I do. My job, my passions, my hobbies, and my creativity all revolve around online life.

By day, I'm a public library web content manager which means I get paid to design, engineer, and put things online for the library.

In my off time, I write and create online content for myself and others. I'm a digital creative dabbling in illustrations, music, video making and podcasting. I'm the author of two books and I've written for several blogs and websites. While I still have a website or two, I've decided to bring the majority of my writing to Google+, a route taken by Mike Elgan and others and it's a method I agree with.

I write about everything that interests me, but if you glance at my drivel you'll see that I tend to write about tech, libraries, the remix culture, Linux and FOSS, online life, online video, podcasts, science, Japanese pop culture. and history.

I consider myself a cyberpunk -- a devotee of high tech and low life -- or at least high tech and low budget. One of my specialities is making tech work, and work well, even with a limited budget.

I have a degree in history, specializing in the history of science. I have an extensive background in astronomy with a focus on exosolar planetary systems. I'm a librarian who's worked in libraries for 18 years. Some of it made sense along the way.
Bragging rights
I wrote a couple of books. They're not great, but they're two more than most people write. :)
