This graph is frightening. Not in the data it presents but how it presents it -- in a totally misleading fashion designed to trick you into believing something. Whoever designed this has absolutely no moral sense whatsoever.

Took me a couple of minutes to spot what's weird about this graph. You go to Maths Hell for this sort of thing, you horrible gun apologist, you.

Cyberpunk Librarian: Computers In Libraries 2014 - Day Two Wrap Up #cildc #cil2014 ##fb

There’s been a thought running through many of those attending this year’s conference and that is that this is a relatively quiet CiL compared to others. Since this is only my second one, I don’t have much of a mental archive to make a comparison but I…

Confirmed Earth-sized exoplanet in habitable zone

The +NASA Kepler team just announced the confirmed existence of an Earth-sized planet orbiting in the habitable zone of its host star.

This planet is about 500 light years away from our solar system in the constellation Cygnus the swan. It's orbiting an M-dwarf star, also known as a red dwarf, which are the most abundant known stars in our Milky Way galaxy.

The planet's orbit is about 130 days, compared to our 365 days, and since the star is much cooler than the Sun, receives about 1/3 of the solar radiation. The warmth of the planet is unknown, because that would depend on composition of its atmosphere, which has not been established at this point.

While I was attending Computers in Libraries, a story blew up on the Net about a vulnerability in OpenSSL that allows people to snoop the contents of a buffer overflow and receive data to which they are not cleared. Now, that’s a technical version of it.…

Introduction
Hello. My name is Dan. I live online.

No, seriously, I do. My job, my passions, my hobbies, and my creativity all revolve around online life.

By day, I'm a public library web content manager which means I get paid to design, engineer, and put things online for the library.

In my off time, I write and create online content for myself and others. I'm a digital creative dabbling in illustrations, music, video making and podcasting. I'm the author of two books and I've written for several blogs and websites. While I still have a website or two, I've decided to bring the majority of my writing to Google+, a route taken by Mike Elgan and others and it's a method I agree with.

I write about everything that interests me, but if you glance at my drivel you'll see that I tend to write about tech, libraries, the remix culture, Linux and FOSS, online life, online video, podcasts, science, Japanese pop culture. and history.

I consider myself a cyberpunk -- a devotee of high tech and low life -- or at least high tech and low budget. One of my specialities is making tech work, and work well, even with a limited budget.

I have a degree in history, specializing in the history of science. I have an extensive background in astronomy with a focus on exosolar planetary systems. I'm a librarian who's worked in libraries for 18 years. Some of it made sense along the way.
Bragging rights
I wrote a couple of books. They're not great, but they're two more than most people write. :)
