Some potential figures on the impact of driverless cars, based on Google's estimates:

* 90% fewer accidents means 30,000 lives saved, 2 million injuries prevented, and over $400 billion in costs saved. Every year, in the US alone.

* 90% reduction in wasted commuting means saving 4.8 billion hours, 1.9 billion gallons of fuel, and $101 billion in productivity and fuel costs. Every year, in the US alone.

Then you can add all the corresponding savings in pollution (and related health & climate costs), car purchase costs (rental will be cheaper and more convenient), infrastructure costs (less fuel needed, less parking lots, and in some countries, less roads needed), insurance payouts, etc etc - the ripple effect will be enormous.
