" "Beef. Real food for real people." The irony is that the beef offered here as the symbol of a certain lifestyle (the "real" grass-root working-class Americans) is much more chemically and genetically manipulated than the "organic" food consumed by an "artificial" elite." - Žižek. So glad the Guardian publishes this guy...http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2014/may/21/prix-pictet-photography-prize-consumption-slavoj-zizek
From fear of being seen smoking to Starbucks' 'coffee karma', we've arrived at a cultural impasse as consumers. As the Prix Pictet photography prize tackles the theme of consumption, Slavoj Žižek traces how we've ended up buying into lifestyles rather than living our lives

I've always had a hard time explaining my learning disability and what it's like on a daily basis. Great to see someone take on this subject. Hope this gets spread around and people can start to understand how others interpret the world.

During the Arab Spring I argued that by focusing on the technology aspect dis-empowered the people using that technology. This article makes another important distinction about the use of technology, democracy, and free speech.
We have free speech online because we have free speech offline, not the other way around.

This is how we should all be, if we are lucky enough:
"I'm going to have to keep performing till I die because I'm not going to die in some rocking chair with a big ol' beer belly. I'm going to die onstage with an explosion of body parts.''
Surf guitar legend Dick Dale refuses to give in to diseases and ailments that would kill a lesser man, mainly because of the love of his life -- wife Lana. He is at the Grog Shop on Thursday, July 24.

This dog got double dinner tonight by acting like she hadn't been fed the first time.

Interesting that longtime residents may be more likely to stay in place during gentrification, but I'd be curious how long that lasts. Just because they have a longer interval between moves, the moves previously may have been within the neighborhood and not forced, eventually, to give up their neighborhood to the nouveau riche and move to a more affordable neighborhood. This is not even to take into account the loss of small businesses to service jobs for the new residents.
New studies suggest low-income people are less likely to leave transitioning communities, not more.

Great place with great staff. If you want coffee and a bite to eat and none of the pretension of what passes as cafes these days this is your place. Relaxed and Friendly. The kind of place you can get work done or pass away the hours with a friend.
