My take on +Matt Cutts' blog post about the dying breed of guest posting for SEO purposes.

Matt Cutts: Guest Blogging Is Dead... For SEO - What Does This Mean

I clarify a bit what Matt was writing about on his blog, who has to worry, and how to move forward in 2014 with your content marketing and SEO strategy.

I've always said (so did Matt) to focus on high-quality content. That much hasn't changed in years.

Matt Cutts stated that guest blogging is no longer viable for SEO link-building. What does this mean for people doing outreach, and SEO in 2014?

+Frithjof Petscheleit This has been hinted at for a while, and really isn't new. Matt has always said that low-quality links will hurt your SEO - the penguin update and disavowed links, sponsored content and nofollow, etc.

Google is just treating low-quality guest posts as advertorials now, which require nofollow links.

If you practiced writing low-quality guest posts, then yes, you might have to change your strategy. But knowing you, that isn't the case, so I would assume you don't really have to change much on your end :)

Is Real-Time Marketing Dead?

A great questions and discussion asked by +Sam Fiorella on the +InNetwork Inc. blog today.

"There’s a growing debate around the concept of real-time marketing.  The problem may be that it is – more often than not – fabricated. Marketers have simply been trying too hard to go viral and not focusing on the true nature of real-time marketing."

Please join the discussion at http://innetwork.net/2014/01/is-real-time-marketing-dead/
As we enter 2014, some are calling real-time marketing a fad, and predicting its death. But is it really? Or is only real-time content dead?

Should we add a "rented media" category?

I haven't published anything new on LinkedIn in a while, but I read a post this morning that really got me thinking. Thought I'd express my concerns in this post:

http://www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20140331135714-127250022-should-we-add-a-rented-media-category

What do you think? Should company social media pages be considered under the "owned media" umbrella? Or should we create a new category for them and treat them as "rented media?"

I was reading an article on Content Marketing Institute about how employee advocates should share company content (which I think is a great idea), but I had to pause after the opening paragraph: The

It's New Year's Eve, and I just got home from dinner, the movies, and fireworks. I'm now sitting in a recliner, with an Old Fashioned that I made with the bar kit I got for Christmas, and I'm thinking about what I've seen in digital marketing in 2013. The industry has come a long way from when I ...
