The first century idea of paradise and the Roman Catholic concept of purgatory aren't the same, but I see your point. I'm not advocating purgatory. I would be interested to look into the writings of the patristic fathers at the time that the "Harrowing of Hell" became an entrenched Christian idea - say, the period of the Council of Nicea - and see if there is any reconciliation between the Luke passage about paradise (however it is understood) and the descent into hell.
