Wrote a bit about the recent pronouncements from Reddit, and how this means that every user of the site is now sponsoring hatred.
There’s a half-decent article over at the verge on the compete and utter failure of reddits founders to cope with the cesspool of hatred their site has become. Contributors on other sites 1 have taken the next step in parsing Huffman’s statement and concluded that, by refusing to ...

I just deleted my reddit account (never used it much anyway) as I do not wish to be counted as a 'user'
I encourage others to do the same

Wrote briefly about RTE's very strange version of 'balance' regarding the Marriage Referendum. Loleks ahoy in this piece!

Have to ask:

What clueless numpty in Google thought that requiring PIN entry to answer a fecking phone call was a Great Idea™?

It makes a phone with android lollipop utterly unusable as a phone! The stupid, it burns!

Wrote a blog post on the awful treatment of women (among other things) in Peter F Hamilton's writing.

I've been mulling over this article for a few weeks, hit send on it today, and immediately discovered Charlie Stross published an article today on some of the same issues. Bloody typical :)
Over the last few years, I've been reading SF and Fantasy almost exclusively, I've been following along with various read throughs, always looking for more and varied reading experiences. I've been incredibly lucky to be doing this in the midst of an explosive outgrowth of quality writing in ...

The podcast “Serial”, an offshoot of the wildly popular “This American Life”, has been shooting up the podcast charts on iTunes and elsewhere recently. Even those on my favourite irc channel have recently been asking questions about it. To them my response has always been that I find it tendentious and tedious, I just don’t rate it at all.

For a Serial about a real life crime, the approach of the host, Sarah Koenig, just annoys me. Where some find multilayered delicacy, I hear deliberate obfuscation and equivocation. That’s before you consider what some, who’ve listened to more of this dreck than I, have identified: Koenig continues the trope of the Brave White Journalist, travelling into alien cultures and then telling them what they’re doing wrong. This article is an excellent review of these issues.

On cringing through the mystery.

If the producers of Serial are to be believed, they spent 12 months attempting to track down the Lee family for their version. It is a glaring omission, but it doesn't look like it was preventable if they wanted to air.

Right, been a long while since I posted anything here. Delighted to note that I wrote a review of Kameron Hurley's fantastic novel The Mirror Empire over on my blog. Please: Buy this book! You won't regret it.
Kameron Hurley, author of the exquisite Bel Dame Apocrypha has had a great year. She won two Hugo Awards at LonCon, Best Fan Writer and Best Related Work for her brilliant article We Have Always Fought, an exploration of the place of women in war, the paucity of the portrayal of these women in ...

Watch the video included on this page. It is probably the most honest few minutes ever broadcast by a 24 hour news channel, never mind CNN who's reporting of Ferguson had, up to this point, been overwhelmingly biased towards the "all sides to blame" false equivalency bullshit.

NATO "Riots" vs Ferguson
I am on a deadline but I don't want to let the morning slip away without these images. During the recent NATO meeting in Chicago, there was plenty of violence. Google NATO POLICE CHICAGO and you will see truncheons, blood, arrests, and angry statements abou...

Finally put the rage down long enough to write reasonably cogently on the Marriage Referendum

We cannot falter now. Vote Yes.
I dimly remember being in a First Year Law class in 1991. The class was taught by Peter Ward, who went on to head up Ireland’s Free Legal Advice Centres organisation, and was called Introduction to the Legal System. Part of the class was informing the students about the ...

What the hell android?? As can be seen in details, phone not active, screen not on. Handset uncomfortably warm to touch.

I'm getting annoyed at the possible interactions that Android allows. Turns out the Lego Commander app (that talks bluetooth to the EV3 brick) craps all over any attempts to pair to bluetooth systems, and craps stuff to the logs, while burning through battery.

Hailo has a similar problem - it's app tries to find a taxi driver every 15 seconds, so it wakes up the phone, starts bluetooth, broadcasts, and goes back to sleep.

Yes, I know, there are a lot of shitty apps. But .. the OS should not allow this to happen.

This is, quite simply, amazing. Skewers the unthinking idiocy of Fox News in a no-holds barred vicious rant. Wonderful.

Wrote a short thing. Fury prevents further writings at this time.
In response to the growing disquiet on social media regarding the story of a suicidal young rape-victim denied a termination, who was later sectioned, force-fed & forcibly delvered of a child, our Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald, has come out with the following statement: ...
