Got some progress on the new a11y plug. If you're already using "large" fonts in Freya you might be able to appreciate that these knobs go to 11. Seriously that's some big text.

+Corentin Noël has been working super hard on a major rewrite of the backend for Music. He's ditched SQLHeavy and moved to LibGDA for database management. Playlists are now Zeitgeist powered. Overall, we're talking about massive speed and stability improvements. We could use help testing, though! So please branch this and shove your music library through it :)

+Vita Homolka Yes I did try several clients. Sonata isn't to good as well IMHO; it looks like its straight from the 1980's, even worse than GMPC.

This thread is depressing dude. This is exactly why we can't have nice things. Right here. We're talking about giving a measly $500 to a guy who makes things that EVERYONE relies on. And the prevailing attitude here is "I don't have to!"

It's sad. It's really sad. If Eric S. Raymond can't raise $500/mo, how the hell can we tell developers that it's worth their time to pay attention to us? What kind of nerve do we have getting pissed at any major developer for ignoring Linux? When our culture is so built around taking everything you can and proclaiming that you don't have any obligation to give back... just.. what the fuck.

Well, I'm a novice, a Linux newbie and a programming illerterate. I support OSS and elementary particularly because I don't like the direction that the commercial software industry is going, subscription based, propriatary, privacy issues, etc. I think OPEN SOURCE is the last bastion for technological freedom. If it dies, we'll all get absorbed into the techno corporate matrix.
Why do people have NO PROBLEM paying $200+ for Apple and Windows software and devices, but scream bloody murder when an Open Source developer asks for $20 or $50 and you get lifetime support and updates. It makes no sense to me. Support Open Source and you support freedom! 'Merica

Looking to confirm two things on our website (http://elementary.io):

1. Non-English users: does the checkout dialog use your language now? Specifically, users with one of these languages: https://support.stripe.com/questions/what-languages-does-stripe-checkout-support
2. Chinese users, do you now have Alipay available as a payment method?
A fast and open replacement for Windows and OS X. Pay what you want or download for free.

I love this Q&A man. It is still so relevant. Steve Jobs was on fire. But something I forgot he talked about was this very important view,

"I think the wisdom here is not to say that we've gotta invent everything ourselves. The wisdom here is to know what 10% or 20% or 30% probably at most of the stuff that we should invent and what we should go use that exists... This whole notion of being so proprietary in every facet of what we do has hurt us"

"There's a lot of smart people that don't work at Apple too."

"I don't think it's good that Apple's perceived as different. I think it's important that Apple's perceived as much better. If being different is essential to doing that, then we have to do that. But if we can be much better without being different, that would be fine with me."

And I think that's something we pretty much all agree about in the free software community. There's a lot of smart people in each of our camps. And in order to be much better, it's essential that we aren't all too different. We need a certain level of same-ness to leverage each other's abilities. Standards are good and important. Open-ness is good and important. Sharing is good and important.

+Mark Gaiser yeah isn't it crazy! It's still incredibly relevant. Especially for us in open source. And it's very impressive to see how many years ahead his vision was for computing.

Some good/interesting conversation here about funding open source software. I think Chris has some really valid/balanced opinions about funding and the perceptions around it from both the side of creators and consumers.

A point was being made that it's better to donate to the projects that develop the utilities that are used to develop the linuxdistributions, rather than the linuxdistributions itself. For people who are less technical or "in the know" I would disagree. One of the reasons I support elementary OS via patreon is because who better than the developers of an linuxdistribution know which utility is most critical to their work. For instance, normally I would never consider donating to Inkscape, because I'm not a graphical designer and never use the program, but still they received donations from me through the elementary project, because it's what they use and need to develop the project.

New network plug is coming along pretty well. And of course you already know about the new indicators ;) #ShowYourDesktopFriday

Next new plug seems like it's going to be A11y and there's a branch for Mouse & Touchpad as well

+Marijo Mustac You can file issues at https://bugs.launchpad.net/switchboard-plug-networking

There is already an open issue about moving the extra info at the bottom. It's only there temporarily.

Hey folks. +Sam Hewitt is working on new designs for a11y settings in elementary OS. Would love some feedback about the available options here.

I'd like to make sure that everything presented here:
1. Makes sense as it's labeled and organized. As in, you think you'd be able to easily find the things that you need and understand what each setting does just by reading it.
2. Is useful and relevant. We admittedly don't know your exact needs. If we're putting out stuff that's not useful in an attempt to just throw everything out and see what sticks, we could be obfuscating really important stuff. So pointing out things that aren't needed is helpful too.
3. Is a complete set. If we're missing helpful tools, please let us know. We want to make sure that we're up on the latest and greatest.

Thanks!

Hats off to +elementary! I have got so many people onto this OS now I've lost count. Many of them Chromebook users looking for more options but a clean and familiar experience.

In open source communities, instead of celebrating the so called rockstar, we also ought to be more vocal about the commitment of those humble contributors with less flashy superpowers that often do the boring and less newsworthy tasks that makes the community cogs work together. Thank you. You know who y'all are.
