Saving the Internet

Each day, almost all of us interact with various surfaces of the internet. We check our email, read the news, and ask for directions anywhere in the world, and, for the most part, all seems smooth at the surface. Sure, every now and again we encounter some blemish, as a website falters under heavy use or presents some vulnerability. But these blemishes are localized, easily noticed and easily treated.

Beneath this surface, this skin, lies a skeleton holding the form of each web page and service aloft — DNS, NTP, backbone routers, SSL. This framework is built of sterner stuff and less prone to visible bruising, obscuring any neglected malaise within until rupturing forth on the surface to demand attention. And thus we find all our interactions endangered by such vicious failings as Heartbleed and Stagefright, provoking concern and complaint until the maladies are treated and the skeleton's thrashings quiet — but the conditions that breed these dangers remain.

Undermanned and low on resources, the projects that provide and maintain the core infrastructure that we rely upon daily need our help, and the +Internet Civil Engineering Institute is one group trying to coordinate it (https://icei.org/activities/giving-help/). Whether by committing personal coding expertise or providing funds to acquire that of others, we all can help save the internet.

He wasn't my first choice, but he was a better candidate than Trump or Kasich.

Had a biscuit to eat for breakfast this morning but no gravy to put on it. Normally I eat some Chobani fruit Greek yogurt. As I pondered what to combine with my biscuit, it dawned on me: I could make a breakfast strawberry shortcake by putting the two together. In my mind at least, it lived up the title. Add fresh fruit like blueberries on top for extra goodness.

I've been shopping mechanical keyboards for over half a year, and I've finally found one to pull the trigger on. While I plan to use the keyboard for work rather than gaming, the other values of the project excite me as well. RGB backlighting? Check. MX-compatible keycaps? Check. Tweakability? Check. Willingness to ship any keyboard layout with sufficient demand? Check! Acknowledgement that Linux users exist and a desire to support them? Double check! I've been looking for a backlit mechanical Dvorak keyboard for months and the only other options I've seen have involved purchasing the keycaps as a made-to-order set after the fact. I'm pretty excited, even though I was hoping for a Cherry MX Brown style keyswitch.

So that's how he got so good at scamming the average American. Casinos, seminar scams, and strategic bankruptcy — sounds like the perfect preparation for the highest and most honorable office in the country.
How love of a good (insane) late-night infomercial led to a front row seat for the #Trump University origin story.

Everyone take a deep breath. Congrats to Apple for outlasting this madness.
Breaking—apparently the feds don't need Apple any longer in their encryption battle.

"The government has now successfully accessed the data stored on Farook’s iPhone and therefore no longer requires the assistance from Apple Inc.," prosecutors wrote in the Monday filing.

I'd ask if you are that one guy who cares enough to attend. But I'd only find the fakes, because technically none of us are that guy, we just might be like him.

The spin is strong with these analysts. Cruz unexpectedly won, but all you hear is how well Rubio did. SMH. #iowacaucus #cruz #vote2016
