I was recently part of an interview on the "Assistive Technology Update" podcast, discussing the work I've been involved with in using the Project Tango tablet for navigation for people who are visually impaired. You can listen to it, or read a transcript, here.

For reference, here is an earlier tech writeup I had made of our work so far: http://www.dan.andersen.name/navigation-for-the-visually-impaired-using-a-google-tango-rgb-d-tablet/

I've been working on a Tango project for sonification of depth data to help people who are visually impaired to navigate indoor environments. My goal is to use the depth data to simulate echolocation. Here's an article and video about a prototype of the system.
Soon, your phone or tablet could navigate the real world just like you. In the hands of Purdue University researchers, the technology — a Google experiment called Project Tango — could help the visually impaired walk freely. Google's new Tango tablet has yet to hit the public. But the Web giant has slowly released the technology to researchers with promising ideas for potential applications.

Good luck, Dan! Many years ago I did something similar using stereo vision for depth mapping http://www.seeingwithsound.com/binocular.htm Decisive for success with the blind and visually impaired is if the 3D sensing technology will land integrated in affordable and unobtrusive mass market hardware such as perhaps future augmented reality glasses. Apart from Google Tango I'm also keeping tabs on Intel RealSense.

Today I found an interesting issue in a Rails project I was working on. I had a form with two image-buttons, one for exporting a report to PDF, the other to CSV. My original code in the view was: <...

Is there any way to access the front-facing camera while the Tango service is running? Attempted it today and was very disappointed to get crashes when attempting to initialize the Tango service with the front-facing camera opened.

+Daniel Andersen rooting your device will allow you to modify the operating system.
If it is a hardware limitation, well that's that, but if it's something that can be enabled in software then it can be done.
The Tango runs an outdated version of Android and it is quite simple to backport fixes from newer releases of the OS if they enable the functionality you require.
I will try and have a look at this tonight for you.

I made some improvements to my Project Tango navigation for the visually impaired. Here's a quick writeup of my approach.
Introduction. As part of my work at Purdue University's Envision Center, I've been investigating the potential of RGB-D sensors for navigation for the visually impaired. There has been some prior work in this area, such as smart canes that contain a depth sensor to give haptic feedback when the ...

It's all Android Java, rendering using OpenGL ES (a few parts of the rendering, and the 3D audio, use C++ via JNI).

I've been using this since it came out. The IDE certainly lives up to its claim for faster app development
