How do viral videos make money? YouTube ad revenue, yes. But a viral video has a whole range of distribution platforms, all of which feed one another and bolster the video's demand and subsequent revenue. Exposure to a video on any one platform drives demand and viewership for the same video on other media. For example, if a video does well on YouTube, its viewership might make it compelling enough for a slot on Ellen, which in turn increases the shares of the video on YouTube and perhaps spurs local TV stations to feature a clip as well. Sometimes, videos will be licensed years after they go viral; the life cycle of viral content is longer than just 15 minutes of fame. All of the below licensing opportunities featured in this infographic can be monetized for a video's creator; success for a particular video is more complex and relational than just a view count on the YouTube watch page. UGC is ubiquitous in the digital video ecosystem, and videos can have a productive life on many different platforms.

Hi Guys - thanks so much for mentioning our Octoly-Newzoo ranking. A quick explanation of the Octoly methodology (I posted as Octoly ID but it got filtered I think). Simply put, we put videos into two buckets as dictated by the data that's possible to retrieve: Anything on a channel owned by the brand is a "brand view" (includes organic views or those driven by pre-rolls). That's considered "owned media" in our study. "Earned media," aka "fan views," is anything that is on a non-branded channel. These YouTubers might be sponsored or they might not, but it's hard to tell, and so we're not breaking that out. Five Nights at Freddy's does no paid media as far as we know.

The numbers are much bigger this month because we've doubled the depth our algorithm in the last 30 days. Importantly a lot of the rankings are the same as last month, so the increased numbers were somewhat equal across the spectrum. Also, when we track a game, the nature of the data means we have to group all versions, languages and platforms of a game into a single game title. So Five Nights at Freddy's was from v2 for Feb, except if a creator was talking about it before its release, like speculating about what it would be like.
