Where do you find the meaning in life?
I've realized I have very little to live for – we all, actually, have little to live for. We work jobs where we do some form of shuffling around money, either creating stuff that will sell for money or managing the money itself or directing the people who make the money. Whatever.
In the end, what do you actually leave behind? What's your mark? Usually, nothing.
That's infinitely depressing. And, listen, I don't believe in God or heaven or anything; but if I did, that wouldn't change my mind. Eternal life without a purpose is still life without a purpose.
The only mark left behind that seems to be worth anything is a child. In the end, they also just go on to live a meaningless life, too – but in your lifetime, at least, keeping a child alive and happy is a real purpose. And maybe if we keep doing this, someone's child at some point will discover a greater purpose, and it will be better after that.
I don't have children. And I don't plan to have children. Because I would be terrible at it.
But my sister has this beautiful child that I call "Bean" (that's not her real name), and I think I can leave my mark by helping to keep her alive and happy sometimes.
She's just shy of 2, and I don't know how my role in this will look (Mom and Dad cover the alive and happy thing pretty well already) but it gives me a purpose for life. I love her, and she seems to like me, and I plan to stick around.
Bean outshines any other so-called priorities in my life: a solo-biz, a writing career, a blog audience. But she also gives me a reason to make those things work – so one day she can see them and know that she has an opportunity to shuffle around money in a way she doesn't completely hate.
It's not much for "the meaning of life", but if she passes the message on, maybe she and the other marks my peers have left on the world will get a little closer.
