D is for DIY (and Dana)

"DIY" is a weird kind of drive behind the work I do. It's the name I halfheartedly gave my brand (DIY Writing) because it seemed simply fitting and sounded cool. But the more I dig into my work, the more I learn how fitting it actually is for the kind of work I do and services I offer – for my philosophy as a writer and a whatever-else-I-am.

DIY to me has come to incite a mantra to accompany everything I do: Do it your way, create the life that's right for YOU...

When it comes to writing and publishing, DIY is a little about bucking conventions – but maybe not in a "stickin' it to the man" kinda way. More of a "stop giving so many fucks, and just do what you want" kinda way. It's about forgetting the rules and expectations and just creating what's right , in a way only you can know.

It's also the simpler philosophy of "do-it-yourself" – in the redecorating your kitchen in a weekend kinda way. The get your hands dirty, learn as you go, feel the victory of accomplishment when it's done way. The do it your way, way.

I don't know how to get this message to the people , or if I have to, but it's how I desperately try to work. "Desperately", because I'm constantly fighting the pulls of convention and expecations, even in this so-called unconventional career/lifestyle.
