Feature Update - Last week, during the Panda 4.1 update, there were also major changes to In-depth Articles and answer boxes (at least here in the US). More info about answer boxes on the main blog tomorrow, but this is an update on In-depth.
In our data set, In-depth articles jumped from 12.7% of queries to 16.6% (a 31% increase). Interesting to note that In-depth launched (again, in our data set) at 3.5% of queries - so, their presence has almost quintupled since launch. Our data set is skewed a bit toward shorter, "head" queries, so results may vary in the real world.
Between 9/23-9/24, a number of queries gained In-depth, including:
* raspberry pi
The list of URLs is still dominated by big publishers, although diversity seems to be increasing slightly. The top 5 publishers by % of URLs (in our data set) are:
The top 5 account for 38.5% of all in-depth URLs in our data set, and the top 10 account for over half (52.5%), so it's definitely still good to be a major news site.
At this point, In-depth Articles appear to be updating, on average, about monthly (although the actual cycle can vary quite a bit). There may be minor changes in between, but the big update cycles appear not to be real-time. They update more like early Panda updates or the original "Google dance".
