Site Speed & Performance  -

Does anyone know what exactly "time spent downloading a page" in "Crawl Stats" is measuring? Had a client lately who's analytics page speed got much slower but TSDAP (time spent downloading a page) was flat or improved. I'm going to suspect a hazy guess GA is reporting how long all the elements take to load in the browser and TSDAP is reporting something closer to server response time?

We once had a sudden downward spike in "time downloading." Turns out it was related to a sharp increase in internal redirects.

Here's an example of how query data could influence search rankings. It was noted by +Will Critchlow that Apple is already ranking #1 for "watch". On the surface it seems like this may have happened really quickly, and Will is right to question if it's what searches want ranking #1. But in fact [apple watch] gets FIVE times the amount of searches as just "watch" - and I believe Google is ranking Apple #1 for watch because of this. Google can associate "Apple" the brand with "watch" the product category pretty confidently What do you think?

Yeah, I've already seen black hat SEO schemes to game this for a few bucks. Search and click-farms basically.

A post for bands / musicians but really most brands can leverage some of the tips in here (my newest article on +Moz)
For B2B or ecommerce, people often discover your brand with commercial queries like "dining room lamps" or an informational search like "how to fix a dishwasher". Then they look around your site, your social profiles, get retargeted—before ever making a purchase—but in many cases that journey started with an non-branded organic search.

Knowledge-Based Trust vs. Truthiness

"That's really scary to think about on this weekend."

Was this Fox News reporter talking about her concerns around climate change? Nope, she's worrying about how Google's latest Knowledge-Based Trust research will affect the battle between facts and truthiness.

What's interesting is that when you read the actual research paper (http://goo.gl/13krAS), one of the examples that the Google researchers use is actually the birthplace of President Obama, using it to show "Kenya" as an incorrect answer, while "U.S." is correct. Yep. Not truthiness, but truth.

Might we be headed to a very different version of the web, where it's no longer “Let the public decide what’s the truth” and we start building in better accountability structures for facts and truth? I hope so.

Yes, Peter Parker's uncle Ben got it right when he noted that "with great power comes great responsibility." And that will be very much true when (not if) Google rolls out these new capabilities in Search, but personally, I'm quite excited at the prospect and the destabilization of truthiness that we've learned to accept as modern reality.

Thanks to +Karen Peck and +Robert T. Best for catching this one.

Now why would Fox News be worried about Google beginning to rank websites based on trustworthiness?

Four Rules For Tearing Apart Your Client's Link "Wish List"

Often times clients will give you their link "wish list" - sites they want links from - just because they think it will help rankings. Sometimes our job is to help them refine that list and help them prioritize their efforts.

Learn the four steps I take to determine if it's worth getting a link from a particular site. They do NOT have to do with domain authority or link juice!!

Anyone know when submitting a URL to the index with “fetch as googlebot”, do you use the hashbang or escaped fragment version?

Thanks!

+John Mueller thanks! in this case the escaped fragments seem to be chosen over hashbang -  but it's ok as long it's one or the other?

Noticed this over the weekend in Google Autocomplete. Google is pulling what you normally see at the bottom of search results under "related searches" into the search suggest bar after hitting enter, and replacing your cursor).

This could have pretty big implications for user search behavior.

Say I want to look for shows, I think of "Zappos" and search [Zappos] - but I don't immediately see what anything that interests me. A follow up search could result in me going right to a competitor.

(thanks +Glenn Gabe for sharing!)

Whoa, check this out. Great catch from +Dan Shure -> If anyone missed my tweets this weekend, Google seems to be showing "related searches" in autocomplete #seo
