post about a caching issue, causing 10,000 API RPM. Also, my most clever blog title for Oscars: cache me if you can http://www.mayerdan.com/programming/2015/02/21/cache-me-if-you-can/ #ruby #rubyonrails #caching
Recently, I was looking at a few endpoints to speed up. We were expecting to send large volumes of traffic to a few URLs and wanted to make sure they were fast. While digging in, I found about 10000 unexected requests per minute (RPM), going between one of our back end services and another.

Sharing some thoughts on safer refactoring #programming   #rubyonrails

I worked on other things for most of that time while it went through some PR review and QA, but it was still a task to check in on each day. Hooray! Started as an estimated 2 ...

Over the course of four days we rode across most of Kenya and Uganda in an overland truck (it's a truck, not a f***ing bus), crossing the equator a couple of times, and camping along the way. We ad...

We safely arrived in Africa. The first leg of the trip in Asia was a awesome success. Looking forward to exploring Africa as we finished gearing up for our 24 days of camping / Safari. #travel   #africa
Nairobi, Kenya. So far, our exorbitantly-priced "official" taxi ran out of gas in the rush-hour-packed streets of Nairobi on the way to the hotel from the airport. (So, we waited anxiously in a cab...

Sharing my thoughts on Ruby communities in SE Asia. #rubyfriends

http://www.mayerdan.com/programming/2015/01/21/ruby-in-south-east-asia/
Rubyists are a welcoming community everywhere. Some great things are going on in the Ruby communities in SE Asia. As we were traveling I decided I would like to meet some Ruby communities along the way in other parts of the world. I reached out to Rails Girls, and their organizers were amazing, ...

after traveling awhile some thoughts on how small restaurants and hotels can really improve biz with tourists. I helped a hotel in Ghana with some of these items #travel
As we have traveled for months we often have to rely on online reviews. We are forced to as we often show up in cities with no contacts on the ground and plans to see some attractions. This means when it comes to hotels, food, ATMs, taxis, bars, and other activities we turn to the net.
